UC Irvine Defeated 11-6 in NCAA Regional Final

CORVALLIS, Ore. --- UC Irvine baseball fell to No. 15 national seed Oregon State Monday afternoon in the NCAA Regional Final at Goss Stadium, 11-6.
  • In a game that was played over the course of two days due to weather, the 'Eaters and Beavers battled for a second time on the weekend after Oregon State won the winner's bracket game Saturday night, 5-3
  • In Sunday night's portion, UCI got out front well in the first inning
    • Sixth-year Anteater Nick Rincover made his first career start and sat down the Beavers with two strikeouts in a scoreless top of the first
    • The Anteaters as the home team took advantage and went up 4-0 loading the bases getting a big hit on a three-run Dub Gleed home run
    • The hosts found their bats in the second inning with a three-run home run of their own to draw within one, and added two more to take the lead, 5-4, in a five-run inning
    • Oregon State was gifted a run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch that slipped from Ryder Brooks' hand to score a runner from third with two outs and lead 6-4
    • OSU's starter threw the first pitch of the fourth inning behind Thomas McCaffrey hitting him before the umpires suspended the game due to field conditions in a game that had seen steady precipitation throughout
  • The game was resumed Monday nearly 24 hours later picking up right where it left off in the fourth inning
    • UCI got McCaffrey home on a dropped fly ball by an Oregon State outfielder to make it a 6-5 game after four innings
    • UC Irvine countered with its ace, Nick Pinto, to start the game on the mound for the fifth inning.
    • The Beavers were not deterred hitting Pinto from the get-go and knocking him out after just two outs and building the lead back to 8-5
    • Dub Gleed restarted the Anteater charge with his second home run of the game in the sixth and draw within 8-6
    • The lead returned to three after an infield single with the bases loaded, but a great play by Woody Hadeen helped keep it one run, and multiple spectacular plays by Will Bermudez stunted the Oregon State rally
    • UCI's bats were stifled however managing just one hit the rest of the way and three other baserunners without being able to bunch the offense together
    • A pair of solo home runs in the final two innings pushed Oregon State's lead to the eventual final score, 11-6
  • The loss ends UCI's season with a 45-14 record, the best win percentage as a Division I program and tied for the third-most wins in the program's entire history
  • In the effort, Nick Pinto's two outs recorded were strikeouts as he passes Daniel Bibona for the program's career strikeout mark now at 334
  • Through the entirety of the regional, three Anteaters were recognized on the All-Regional Team in Jo Oyama, Caden Kendle, and Myles Smith for their performances
  • UCI's 2-2 mark pushes the program's all-time postseason record to 45-29 all-time, 30-21 as a Division I program, and 21-13 all-time in NCAA Regional
Postgame Thoughts
Head Coach Ben Orloff - "Congratulations to Oregon State for the year they're having. these guys have become the standard on the West and it feels like if you want to go to Omaha, it goes through Corvallis and it goes through Oregon State. And congratuations to what Mitch Canham's doing over here, it's not easy to replace what Coach Casey did here, and for him to be able to keep this thing rolling; they've really got a good team. They're a class act and so congratulations to them and the people here. This is my third of fourth time coming here and everybody just treats us so great - the people that walk us over here to those that help us with the bats, everybody treats us great. We love coming here, we've had a great experience here, and lost to a really good Oregon State team.

"I didn't think much of the suspended game to be honest. I think once the game starts it's in the umpire's hands. It was tough weather conditions all day yesterday, but we try not to spend a lot of time thinking about that stuff that's out of our control. I don't think it had an impact on the score of the game today."

"It's tough coming out of the loser's bracket on these deals. I think since the start of the regional era, it's over 80% of the team the team that wins it does so by winning the first two games and when you don't  do that, you're in a bind. Trying to get 27 outs each night, Nick Pinto's a senior and we've talked about this for a long time about being available come Monday. I don't regret the decision. To win these things out of the loser's bracket, you have to do some unconventional stuff on the mound. So that's what went into it and you're trying to win this thing. You're trying to win two and so you gotta be able to win two games and that's what we needed to do."

Dub Gleed - "Just want to start off by saying that this is one of the best groups of guys that I've ever been a part of, best coached team I've ever been a part of. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to be on this team and around these guys each and every day and play for UCI baseball. All year we just try to grind out games. We know at times it's not going to be perfect. We're ok with that. We're ready for whatever comes our way. We just fought as long as we could, unfortunately we came close but were just short."

Will Bermudez - "All season long, we've just been one big family. Since we all stepped on campus, we've all been pushing for each other whether that's in between the lines, outside the lines, in class, we're just all pushing each other to succeed. Picking each other up is vital to our success, and like Dub said we came up just a little short."
