PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The 2026 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft saw a pair of UC Irvine selections on day two from West Coast organizations.
Trevor Hansen was first off the board for UC Irvine taken in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Angels, 259th overall. He's the first Anteater selected by the Angels since Brian Hernandez in the 2011 Draft who followed Francis Larson in 2010 as 'Eaters selected by the Angels in back-to-back drafts. The ninth round has produced Anteaters like Dub Gleed, Cody Cipriano, and his head coach, Ben Orloff.
Hansen's Anteater career was the model of consistency starting every weekend in his three seasons totaling 46 along with 22 victories, both putting him 12th all-time among Anteater leaders. He posted a career 4.54 ERA in 248 innings striking out 265 to land him seventh all-time at UCI. His standout performance was a complete game shutout as a sophomore against Hawai'i where he struck out 10 from 120 pitches and landed him along with Ryder Brooks as co-National Pitchers of the Week with dueling complete game shutout performances. He added wins against programs like Vanderbilt, Cal, Louisiana, Tulane, Cal Poly, and UC Santa Barbara over his career. He was rewarded ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region honors as a sophomore, was a two-time All-Big West, Big West All-Tournament team honoree, and a Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist.
Joining Hansen late in the draft was fellow pitcher Ryder Brooks selected in the 18th round by the San Francisco Giants, 538th overall. Brooks is just the fifth Anteater selection by the Giants and first alum since Taylor Rashi back in the 2019 draft who is the most-recent 'Eater to make his MLB debut. He joins Jeff Cusick and Drew Hillman as the only Anteaters to come out of the 18th round.
Brooks enjoyed a four-year career playing three of those where he made 60 appearances, 14 times a start, winning 11 games, earning two saves, and punching out 145 in 138 innings. He was a key starter in 2025 earning All-Big West honors and starting Big West Championship and NCAA Regional games. He was the backend of the star-studded weekend vs. Hawai'i in 2025 following Hansen's performance with a complete game shutout adding 10 strikeouts to join Hansen as co-National Pitcher of the Week. He added All-Big West once and was twice named CSC Academic All-District and Big West Spring All-Academic.
