UC Irvine Opens Weekend with 17-5 Win
May 08, 2026 | Baseball
- UC Irvine was playing from ahead with runs in each of the first two innings
- Lucas Schermer doubled up the third base line to score Daniel Polasek, and Schermer scored himself later in the inning on a wild pitch to lead, 2-0
- Zach Fjelstad did it all on his own with a triple to center field, and a throw in from the center fielder bounced away from the third baseman allowing Fjelstad to score and expand it to a 3-0 lead
- The Highlanders were able to answer in the fourth
- After a pair of two-out hits, Robert Pitts slashed his second triple of the game into the corner to score two
- A batter later, the Highlanders drew a throw on a steal before Pitts got himself in a rundown and force an errant throw to score him and tie the game, 3-3
- UCI was back with an answer in the next half inning
- A pair of baserunners and a sacrifice bunt set the table
- Efren Ortega was intentionally walked, and then a non-intentional walk to Rowan Felsch put UCI back in front, 4-3, and brought on a pitching change
- The first batter after the pitching change was Zach Crandall who clubbed a ball into the gap to score two more
- An error helped a fourth run across in the inning and a 7-3 UCI lead
- In an 8-3 game, the Highlander bats arose once again
- The first three batters reached and pushed across a run ending Trevor Hansen's day in the sixth inning
- Ricky Ojeda came on allowing a walk and sacrifice fly to make it 8-5, but then two strikeouts ended the inning and the threat
- Ojeda put up more zeroes as did Peyton Rodgers while the offense created some distance
- In a fourth-run eighth, Ortega brought a run in after a pair of singles, Zach Doyle shot a ball inside the first base ball to plate two, and he himself scored on Zach Fjelstad's single for a 12-5 lead
- The ninth inning saw five runs on just three hits including an Alonso Reyes RBI single followed by four straight walks, three pushing across runs, and a Noah Alvarez sacrifice fly to cap it, 17-5
- The win keeps UCI in the postseason race for the time being at 22-25 overall at 11-15 in Big West play
- Hansen earned the win getting through five innings with four earned runs allowed
- The bullpen threw four scoreless innings with Ojeda striking out three and Rodgers inducing a double play with the bases loaded
- UCI's bats hammered 17 hits while walking nine times and reaching four times on errors
- Lucas Schermer doubled twice of his four hits and scored four runs as well
- Zach Fjelstad and Alonso Reyes each had three-hit games
- Efren Ortega reached base five times scoring three times and adding a run and an RBI
- Zach Crandall led all players with three RBIs
