'Eaters Drop Series at UCSD with 9-4 Defeat

- The Tritons got the ball rolling on Saturday with a two-run home run in the first and two hits to start the second and score a run for a 3-0 advantage early.
- UCI fought back with a two-out double from Alonso Reyes in the third to plate two and close the game to within 3-2.
- The 'Eaters struggled to capitalize leaving bases loaded in the first, fourth, and fifth innings while UCSD steadily added to their lead with runs in each of the first five innings to build an 8-2 lead.
- UC Irvine's offense got a little jolt in the seventh inning as Lucas Schermer launched home run in his second consecutive pinch-hit opportunity dating back to Sunday to close to within 8-4.
- UCSD would chime in with a solo home run in the eighth and close things out for a 9-4 victory to take the series
- The loss went to Finnegan Wall who was touched up for five runs in 2.2 innings. Each Anteater pitcher allowed a run with Dane Grant the most effective allowing just an unearned run while striking out two without a walk
- The offense struggled to break through with 10 left on base. UCI had five hits, three coming from Daniel Polasek who also scored a run. The other two hits were the run-producing variety with Reyes' two-run double and Schermer's two-run home run

"We were playing from behind early. They scored in the first five innings and were able to capitalize and get big hits. It felt like it wasn't as close as it may have actually been, we gave ourselves chances with baserunners. We hit a couple balls good that they made good plays on. It's good to generate the traffic we just didn't get the big hit."
"Lucas Schermer, he's going to play a lot more just off his pinch hits. He made a great play on a drag bunt and it's cool to see. We're still searching now 40 games in, but his last two at-bats he's got two home runs. He's going to be a good player here."
