No. 12 ‘Eaters Win Big West on Senior Day, 12-10

IRVINE, Calif. —- UC Irvine baseball outlasted Cal State Fullerton in a 12-10 tug-of-war in Saturday's series and regular season finale at Anteater Ballpark locking up the outright Big West regular season title.
  • UCI held the lead four different times including the final time in the sixth inning on a two-run double from Frankie Carney to untie a 9-9 game.
  • The visitor Titans battled back each time the 'Eaters put up runs tying things up in the fourth, taking a lead in the fifth, and countering a six-run Anteater fifth with five in the sixth to tie it again.
  • Alonso Reyes contributed each time for the Anteaters scoring the go-ahead run twice and driving in three runs that all tied or took the lead in a four-hit day.
  • James Castagnola homered to kick off the scoring in the second inning as part of a day reaching twice and putting down two sacrifice hits. Chase Call returned to the lineup after missing the last eight to reach three times scoring twice and added a key outfield assist, and he finished up catching the final out of the game.
  • On Senior Day, fellow senior Danny Suarez took the win in 1.1 innings of relief with another senior David Utagawa bridging the gap with a hold in a scoreless inning, and Max Martin shut the door with his 13th save.
  • UC Irvine's title is the third in program history joining the 2009 and 2021 teams. Ben Orloff has been part of all three claiming two as a head coach now.
  • The 'Eaters celebrated their seniors prior to the game in a ceremony that included team managers Drew Steinhardt and Julian Ruelas along with the seven Anteater seniors - Will Bermudez, David Utagawa, Danny Suarez, Chase Call, Finnegan Wall, Blake Penso, and Ryan Kysar
