IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer fell Sunday in Anteater Stadium in a battle of second-place clubs by a 2-1 score to Cal Poly

- Both sides weren't giving an inch in the early going with end-to-end action
- The Mustangs put up a few distant shots wide of the frame while the 'Eaters earned a pair of corner kicks
- The first of three goals in the first half came down in the 28th minute
- Cal Poly lined up for a set piece near midfield punting it into the box and getting a glance off an UC Irvine defender before it settled into the net for a 1-0 Mustang lead
- The Anteaters got level after a hard foul in the box in the 37th minute
- Mia Colombini took the penalty and beat the goalkeeper who guessed correct to her left as the score evened at 1-1
- Cal Poly was back on the attack up the field as Ashley Brewer fed to Madelyn Dougherty on the left wing who converged and finished inside the far post to go up 2-1 in the 40th minute
- The teams were back on the hunt looking for more goals, but with all the intensity, nothing else fell in the goal
- UC Irvine had eight of the nine shots in the having turning three of them on target
- Suus de Bakker had one of the best chances in the 57th minute after a corner kick slipped out to the right wing and she put a ball on goal that was denied by a Mustang defender
- Ella Colombini had a low hard shot in the 71st minute snagged out of the air by Cal Poly keeper Shannon Porubski
- The best threat came in the final minute as the 'Eaters continued to bear down, and a clearance fell right to Kori Pickelle near the left post who put a ball back on goal and over the near post
- The loss ends UC Irvine's four-match unbeaten streak now sitting at 7-4-5 on the season
- UCI is 4-2-1 in the Big West on 13 points as they entered the match tied for second and even with Cal Poly
- Goal scorer Mia Colombini netted her sixth goal of the season to lead the team, her second from the penalty spot this year
- Laurynn Ziller in net was tested with just one shot on goal without making a save along with the own goal
- She was injured in the final five minutes forced to leave for Savanna Arruda
- UCI finished on top in most stats like shots (11-6), shots on goal (4-1), and corners (7-2)
