Setting The Stage
- First half action was carried out mainly by the hosts who had an 6-1 shot advantage through 45 minutes
- Sara Paul in goal handled just one shot in the opening half, a deflected ball that floated in in the 28th minute
- UCI's only shot was on goal as Ariane Haysman Boaler would up in the 43rd minute.
- Second half started with more of the same by the Mustangs including a second shot needing saving by Paul in the 49th minute.
- UCI began to turn things up as the match headed toward the final quarter hour. Malaina Duro blasted a shot that Shannon Porubski of Cal Poly needed leaping dive to save and set up a corner kick
- That corner from Keira Baranski hit Mimi Yamamoto in stride as her header bounced toward the back post and in for a 1-0 UCI lead in the 75th minute
- A flurry of chances for either side showed up in the final 10 minutes
- The Mustangs sent a corner toward goal that bounced up and off the crossbar in the 81st minute
- A scramble after a set piece in the 88th minute fell at the goalmouth ended with Paul sprawling into action to cover up and wind down the time to a UCI victory.
- A massive victory ends an Anteater drought putting them now at 5-8-3 on the season and 3-5-1 in Big West play on 10 points and two out of the final championship spot
- Yamamoto's goal is her third this season as she's second on the squad in goal and with nine points
- Baranski's assist is the first assist and point of her collegiate career
- Paul's shutout came with two saves on her part, and is the first shutout and second win of her season and career.
