CARY, N.C. --- Anthony Martinez will participate with the U.S. Collegiate National Team this summer as they train and play representing UC Irvine, and on June 28 was named to the final Collegiate National Team roster for the first time in his career.
Martinez was invited to the training camp last summer as well playing in training camp games, but did not make the final camp roster that played games against international squads. Martinez also played in the Cape Cod League where he will begin this summer before joining Team USA in Cary, North Carolina.
The sophomore Anteater first baseman now joins four others from the program that have been part of the tour - Scott Gorgen, Taylor Sparks, Keston Hiura, and Andre Pallante. Martinez was All-Big West First Team for a second straight season where he hit .316 with 81 hits, 18 doubles, and nine home runs all while setting the program record for RBIs in a season with 74.
The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp featured 56 of the premier non-draft-eligible college players for a two-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina onÂ
June 26 and 27. Martinez played in each belting a go-ahead home run in game on. His performance earned him a spot on the team who will play in the International Friendship Series roster starting June 29. The 21st iteration of this series sees the squad play Chinese Taipei in a five-game series extending to July 3 and be played in stadiums across North Carolina in Fayetteville, Greensboro, Kannapolis, and the U.S. Training Complex in Cary with full schedule of games with live streams and live stats links here. The schedule will culminate with a Fourth of July matchup between the two U.S. Collegiate National Team rosters on July 4 in Fayetteville, N.C.
