STORYLINES
UC Irvine's first weekly award of 2019 goes to senior keeper Maddie Newsom as the Big West's Defensive Player of the Week who got her first two wins of the season last week which included a shutout and seven saves. It's the third weekly award of her career.
Scarlett Camberos contributed on each goal assisting on each game-winner in the two matches and adding a goal of her own to open up Sunday's scoring and tie the match. Her three goals, eight points, and 18 shots all lead the squad, and she's tied with two assists.
Alex Jaquez punched home the game-winner Thursday night in the 108th minute of double overtime to defeat ESPN3. Jaquez now has two career goals, both game-winners, as the team improved to 5-1 in home matches broadcasted on ESPN3
The team's 2-0 start marks the fifth time under coach Juniper the 'Eaters have had such a start. Each of the previous four times, UCI has reached the Big West Tournament finishing first in the regular season twice. UCI has won its first three Big West matches twice (2010, 2018) and unbeaten through three matches another time in 2016 (2-0-1)
Aleah Kelley was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award last week, the third in program history and only from the Big West in 2019. Finalists will be named in the coming weeks to see who best exemplifies character, community, classroom, and competition
UCI has taken on three top-10 opponents adding No. 5 BYU to the pair of No. 9s in Virginia and Vanderbilt, the third season all-time facing three ranked foes. UCI opened with a 7-0 loss in their first trip to Virginia, the first time a coach Juniper squad had allowed more than four goals in a match. Elsewhere, the 'Eaters have lost four one-goal matches, three against schools receiving votes.
The Anteater schedule has been littered with challenges with six of their 10 opponents receiving votes in the national polls. Texas Tech and Cal have joined the top 25 since the match with UCI, and two conference opponents are also currently receiving votes. UCI also had a ranked opponent on its exhibition slate falling, 2-1, to UCLA who was ranked No. 4 in the preseason. UCI's non-conference opponents together form a record of 76-33-11, and the non-conference schedule is the sixth-strongest in the NCAA

The Rainbow Wahine have bounced between winning and losing seasons as they enter 2019 coming off a 9-7-1 year and four conference wins. They went just 2-6-1 in non-conference action against the 16th-strongest non-conference slate going into overtime four times. They opened Big West play with one match last week coming from behind to take down CSUN, 2-1, also in overtime, for just their second home win in seven tries
UCI has defeated Hawai'i in all four trips there in their history including a 3-2 battle back in 2017. The goals have been hard to come by with just seven in 10 matches, but two big ones from Kayla Ryan to beat CSUN last match matching the team high previously set by Kelci Sumida. Alexis Mata holds it down in net as one of the conference's best keepers with the most saves (56) and highest save percentage (.789) in the conference and three shutouts to her name
