Anteaters Fall at Hawai'i by 3-0 Count
October 11, 2019 | Women's Soccer
HONOLULU, Hawai'i --- UC Irvine women's soccer saw a halt to their two-match win streak to start Big West play at the hands of the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine late Thursday night, 3-0, at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Reversal of Fortune
UCI's (3-10-0, 2-1-0) offense was humming early with the match's first four shots and three of them on target, but it was Hawai'i (4-6-1, 2-0-0) that broke through on the scoreboard flicking a pass up over the Anteater defense to Kayla Watanabe who settled the ball and finished through keeper Maddie Newsom for the 1-0 Hawai'i lead in the 20th minute.
The Anteaters still controlled the half with a majority of the possession and eight shots to Hawai'i one, but the score remained a 1-0 edge to the Rainbow Wahine.
Terrible Twos
The 'Eater front kept its march into the offensive end in the second half with more tries, but Hawai'i instead built their lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute in a similar style to the first half strike.
The night seemed to be falling the Rainbow Wahine's way at every turn, and their confidence grew into a third goal in the 78th minute capped off by Kayla Ryan to sew up the 3-0 Hawai'i win
Final Score: Hawai'i 3, UC Irvine 0
The Anteaters finished with a 15-8 shot advantage and eight of the nine corner kicks. They turned 10 of their 15 shots on goal all stopped by senior keeper Alexis Mata. Maddie NewsomΒ managed two saves while picking up the loss.
The loss to Hawai'i is just the second in the 11th meeting between the schools and the first time UH has beaten the 'Eaters on their home field in its fifth try.
On To Next Week
UC Irvine will have more than a week to get right for its next Big West matchup when it returns home to host Cal State Fullerton Friday, October 18, in another week with one match. UCI is 2-1-0 through three Big West matches tied at the top with UC Santa Barbara, Hawai'i, CSUN, and Cal State Fullerton as programs all with six points.
