STORYLINES
The 'Eaters are 2-1 through their first three Big West matches. They're tied alongside four other teams with six points trailing their opponent this week, Cal State Fullerton, who has taken all nine points from three conference matches
Maddie Newsom is approaching some milestones as her next match will be her 70th, all as a starter. She would become the third keeper with 70 matches played and tie Danielle de Seriere for the most keeper starts at 70. She reached the 6,500-minute plateau last match as she sits 120 minutes behind de Seriere and 295 minutes played from surpassing Stephanie Boes with the most keeper minutes in UCI history. She's also stopped 247 shots in her career and is looking to become the fourth keeper to reach 250. She sits seven saves shy of surpassing Alicia Miller for third-most in program history. Newsom secured the first award of the 2019 season as the Big West's Defensive Player of the Week on October 7 as she got her first two wins of the season which included a shutout and seven saves. It's the third weekly award of her career.
The team's 2-0 start marked the fifth time under coach Juniper the 'Eaters have had such a start. Each of the previous four times, UCI has reached the Big West Tournament finishing first in the regular season twice.
Aleah Kelley was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, the third in program history and only from the Big West in 2019. The 10 finalists were named last week with Kelley not on the list.
UCI has taken on three top-10 opponents adding No. 5 BYU to the pair of No. 9s in Virginia and Vanderbilt, the third season all-time facing three ranked foes. UCI opened with a 7-0 loss in their first trip to Virginia, the first time a coach Juniper squad had allowed more than four goals in a match. The Anteater non-conference schedule was littered with challenges with six of their 10 opponents currently receiving national votes.. Texas Tech and Cal have joined the top 25 since the match with UCI. UCI also had a ranked opponent on its exhibition slate falling, 2-1, to UCLA who was ranked No. 4 in the preseason. UCI's non-conference opponents together form a record of 83-37-17, and the non-conference schedule is the sixth-strongest in the NCAA

CAL STATE FULLERTON TITANS
The Titans have gone a month since their last loss unbeaten in nine straight (8-0-1) flipping their 4-12-3 record from a year ago to a 10-2-1 mark today. Much like the 'Eaters, CSF has a non-conference win over Northern Colorado, a loss to Arizona State, and they took down UC Davis and UC Riverside in conference play, but added a big 2-1 victory over Long Beach State to give them all nine points through three matches. They're definitely in the driver's seat with big contenders UCSB, Hawai'i, and CSUN all having to visit Fullerton.
CSF has enjoyed five player of the week honors thus far including their first defensive honor last week from Megan Day. Atlanta Primus tops the conference with 28 points and 10 assists to go with nine goals. Maddie Bennett has nine goals of her own, 22 points, and two player of the week honors. Haley Brown completes the attacking trio (4 G, 8 A) to produce 66 of the team's 92 points for a squad that's outscored everyone else in the Big West by at least 10. Noa Schumacher has spent the most time in net with 10 starts for the freshman going 8-2 with 20 saves. Her 1.11 GAA, part of the team's 1.05 GAA, has come against the weakest non-conference schedule amongst the Big West and 289th in the country. CSF does hold the all-time advantage over UCI, 15-9-5, and 7-4-2 in Anteater Stadium
