Steep Comeback Finishes in 11th-Inning Walkoff

Mikey Filia led off the 11th inning with a walk reaching for the fifth time in the game. Ryan Johnston's second sacrifice bunt moved him over, and then Filia stole third to put himself in position for Christian Koss to swat the team's fourth sacrifice fly of the day into short center field scoring Filia just ahead of the throw four hours and 40 minutes after the game started.

The Anteaters (27-18, 8-7) climbed all the way back from a 6-0 deficit put on them by the Oregon Ducks (21-23, 8-13) in the second inning that featured a two-run first-inning single from Spencer Steer and a three-run inside-the-park home run from Jakob Goldfarb in the third inning where Christian Koss dove deep down the left field for a pop up getting a glove on the ball and knocking it all the way into the left field corner. Steer and Goldfarb accounted for all nine Duck RBIs on the day.
The 'Eaters started its ascent back into the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a Konnor Zickefoose solo HR to right field. The 'Eaters scored twice more in the third and posted single runs in the fourth and fifth to draw to within 7-5.
UCI claimed its first lead of the day in the seventh inning behind a Ryan Fitzpatrick RBI single, Adrian Damla's second pinch-hit RBI single in as many days tying things at 7-7, and then Ryan Johnston walking with the bases loaded to give UCI its first lead, 8-7.
The Anteater bullpen, which started in the second inning after starter Taylor Rashi only went one inning, looked to close it up in the ninth with Steer back up to the plate and the tying run at second base. He lashed a ball down the left field line appearing to fall fair, but was ruled foul reseting the at-bat. Steer came back on the next pitch and slipped a ball up and over the left field fence to snag the lead back from UC Irvine, 9-8, in the top half of the ninth.
UC Irvine clawed back to tie as it loaded the bases for Cole Kreuter to punch a sac fly to left field knotting things back up at 9-9 and pushing the ballgame, which had already hit four hours and seven minutes, into extra innings.
Nick Anderson, the 'Eaters' seventh pitcher of the afternoon, earned the victory after one scoreless inning. Oregon used eight pitchers on the afternoon starting with Matt Mercer who had to leave midway through his first hitter of the fifth inning on the hook for four of the runs striking out four without issuing a walk. Jesse Hobaica drew the loss after 2.1 innings. Together, the staffs threw 405 pitches.
Mikey Filia fueled the offense from the nine-hole reaching base five times on a double, single, a walk, and two hit by pitches, part of the seven UCI wore on the day tying a program record. Filia also added a stolen base and scored twice. Ten Anteaters in all had a hit, eight registered an RBI, eight scored a run, and 14 Anteaters were still left on base. The leadoff spot in the order went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI, a run, a walk, and three sacrifices between Jake Palmer and Ryan Johnston.

Spencer Steer ended with five RBIs and three hits leading all players. The top three hitters in the order went 7-for-12 with all nine RBIs and six of the runs.
The finale gets going on Sunday, May 6, with a 12:00 p.m. start. Trenton Denholm with toe the rubber looking to give UC Irvine the sweep against LHP Kolby Somers of Oregon.
