14 hits in 4 games topped with a national batting title scores his 4th award
IRVINE, Calif. --- A monster week for Keston Hiura continues as he earns Big West Field Player of the Week honors.
In a week where UCI went 3-1 defeating UCLA and taking the series against UC Davis, Hiura had a 2-hit, 3-hit, 4-hit, and 5-hit game, the second of his career, to bat .737 going 14-for-19 during that stretch.
His 14-hit week bumped his season average to .442 which led the Big West and topped the entire nation with his average and on-base percentage. His average also qualified as the highest in a single season in UC Irvine history as he joins Tom Spence, .403 in 1971, and Mike Nagle, .402 in 1981, as the only Anteaters to hit .400 in a season.
Hiura also contributed with seven RBI and doubled in each game to also become the Anteaters' career doubles leader with 54. He finished 2017 with 24 doubles tying Taylor Holiday for the most in a season.
The award is the second for UCI in the season joining Cole Kreuter, and the fourth of Hiura's career as he took home one as a sophomore and two as a freshman.
