Sasaki, Yamamoto Rise Up for 2-0 Victory

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer played its first home conference matchup Saturday night in Anteater Stadium and landed its first Big West win, 2-0, over Cal State Bakersfield.

- UC Irvine jumped out to the advantage from the opening whistle earning three corners in the first two minutes.
- One corner curled on goal from Ariane Haysman Boaler needing a leaping save to deny a goal
- Haysman Boaler was on the receiving end of another corner with a header that just missed the far postΒ
- The Anteaters got a couple more solid chances in the 10th and 16th minutes, but just one shot down the final half hour and Cal State Bakersfield gained some momentum
- CSUB earned a corner in the 25th minute and followed that up with a shot on goal saved by Savanna Arruda along with another in the 30th minute
- Arruda's best play of the match came in the 37th minute with a shot from outside the box that was tipped by a Roadrunner on the way in that Arruda needed to change direction to save on a dive and keep things even into the half, 0-0, and in shots, 5-5
- UCI's halftime talk made immediate dividends scoring within the first two minutes of the second half
- Oona Hartman had the ball on the endline and fed it into the box rolling all the way through
- Jasmyne Wheeler ran onto it and pelted a low shot that was saved initially, but the rebound went to Chifumi Sasaki who returned it on goal and in for a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute
- Each side stayed on the attack with shots up from both sides
- Sasaki had a set piece that finished up on goal. Mimi Dominguez had a great look in the 59th minute that never curled on goal and missed just long of the far post
- The 'Eaters got the pivotal second goal in the 62nd minute
- Fiona Shin this time did the dirty work dancing along the endline from the right wing and earning space to feed into the box
- The ball found an Anteater as Mimi Yamamoto's first tough sailed by the keeper and the near post to push the lead to 2-0
- The Roadrunners did not let up continuing to send shots toward the goal
- Arruda was on the task wrapping up short-hops in the 64th and 70th minutes
- CSUB's best chance in the second half came on a fortune bounce to falling to Olivia Green in the 80th minute as her high shot hit the crossbar and stayed out
- Sasaki's goal was her second of the season, third of her career, and is her very first game-winning goal
- Wheeler on the assist gives her one in each of the last two home matches, the first two assists and points of her career
- Yamamoto now has goals in each of the last two matches, the first two of her career
- Shin's assist gives her two, tying her for the team lead, and she takes over the top spot in points with six this year
- Arruda in net had five saves, one off her career high, as Allanah Blye on the other side matched her
- Arruda picked up her third career win and her fourth shutout
- UCI improves to 5-2-1 all-time vs. Bakersfield, and its their first home win in the series now 1-2-1 in Anteater Stadium
- UCI had the advantage most everywhere on the stat sheet including shots, 15-12, and shots on target, 7-5
- The 'Eaters earned 11 corners, the second time this season with 10 or more
