'Eaters Lose Midweek Matchup, 8-4

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball out-hit the hosts Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium, but could not out-score them falling 8-4 to San Diego State.

The 'Eaters shot out of the gate with a leadoff home run by Tommy Farmer for a 1-0 lead
- UCI kept the rally going scoring again after Frankie Carney walked and scored on Zach Fjelstad's RBI single, 2-0
The lead was short-lived as SDSU got a leadoff single and then a home run to quickly tie the game, 2-2
The next inning was more of the same this time with two outs getting a single and home run to go up, 4-2
UCI kept coming with the offense with runners on nearly every inning but unable to push any across leaving multiple runners on base in seven innings on the night
The Aztecs added to their lead with a four-run sixth inning
- A pair of hits put runners on the corners, and a safety squeeze brought the run home with a wild throw to first base setting the table
- After his two-run home run in the second, Zane Kelly plated two more with a double up the first base line to make it a 7-4 lead
- He would eventually score on a passed ball to make it 8-2
Zach Fjelstad answered back with a solo home run to start off the next frame, 8-3, and with two outs the Anteaters got a pair of doubles to make things interesting, but again left a pair on to end the game

San Diego State 8, UC Irvine 4

Tyler Foster made his first collegiate start but drew the loss as a victim to the pair of two-run home runs in the first two innings
- Effective relief came in the form of Danny Suarez, two shutout innings to keep his scoreless streak going now at 12.1 innings pitched
- Dane Grant also came in and settled things down stranded two inherited runners as he retired all four hitters he faced
UCI's offense had 12 hits to nine for SDSU while leaving 15 runners on base Tuesday
- Zach Crandall had a three-hit game for the 'Eaters and reached a fourth time on a walk
- Frankie Carney reached four times with a hit, two walks, and a hit by pitch scoring a run, and nearly a fifth time with a video review negating it
- Zach Fjelstad hit his second home run of the season and drove in two runs
- Kai Smith and Dylan Hillman each had a double in the ninth as part of their two-hit nights
- Tommy Farmer's home run gives him the team lead with three
The loss drops UCI to 9-15 and snaps a seven-game winning streak UCI had against San Diego State
- The loss is also UCI's ninth in a row setting a program record

Up next is a trip to UCI's Black & Blue rivals, Long Beach State, for three games starting Friday, March 27 at 6:05 p.m. Friday's game as well as Sunday's will be broadcasted on ESPN+
