CORVALLIS, Ore. --- UC Irvine baseball saw the nation's longest win streak end at 12 games with a 4-2 loss to No. 11 Oregon State Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
- The hosts got all of their runs from the long ball starting with a two-run homer in the first inning to go up 2-0
- The 'Eaters clawed back into it with a run in the fifth inning after Chase Call was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-1
- UCI added another to tie it 2-2 in the seventh after an error and bunt single put runners on the corners, and Colin Yeaman's double play ball did the job
- The Beavers did what they needed to to get the lead back and hold onto it launching home runs to start their half of the seventh and eighth innings to finish up the 4-2 win
- Trevor Hansen gutted things out into the fifth inning averting traffic on the bases in nearly every inning and keeping Oregon State at two runs
- David Butler helped with the jam in the fifth and worked into the seventh striking out a pair, but drew the loss on the home run in the seventh
- Max Martin came on for two strikeouts in the eighth, but also allowed a home run to start his inning
- UCI was held under six runs for the first time this year in a weekend series game. The two runs matches their lowest run output in any game
- Will Bermudez found a way on the day scoring both Anteater runs while getting one of their four hits and played some spectacular defense
- Frankie Carney reached three times out of the leadoff spot
- Colin Yeaman drove in a run, but saw his 14-game hit streak end
- UC Irvine did a solid job of getting freshman starter Dax Whitney out of the game before the end of the fifth inning. Reliever AJ Hutcheson did his best Ricky Ojeda impression and went the rest of the way striking out six and allowing just an unearned run
The sides are back at it one final time on Sunday for a 12:05 p.m. first pitch for the series. UCI will start third-year lefty
Ryder Brooks while the Beavers come with a lefty of their own, Ethan Kleinschmit
Postgame Thoughts from head coach Ben Orloff
"You're not always going to score 8, 9, 10 runs. Whitney's really good for them, really talented freshman, he's put up his numbers for a reason. We did an ok job with him to chase him out of the game before he reached five. Hutcheson was tough out of the bullpen, he flooded the strike zone. We didn't get many chances, and when we did, we couldn't find the big hit. That was a good 4-2 baseball game."
