No. 12 'Eaters Score 16-7 Win over San Diego

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball defeated San Diego for a Tuesday night victory in Anteater Ballpark, 16-7.
  • The Anteaters started the night off with history taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning from a home run off the bat of Chase Call. His home run set a new all-time Anteater record and the 26th of his career
  • UCI added on in the second inning scoring five more times to make the lead 8-0
    • A single and two hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Colin Yeaman who shot a single up the middle to plate two runs
    • Anthony Martinez brought him home as part of a two-run double into the right-center gap
    • James Castagnola topped it off with a two-out double to score the fifth run of the inning
  • The Toreros jumped into the game with a two-run third inning, and continued to cut into the lead with a run in the fifth to draw within six, a two-run home run in the seventh to make it a 9-5 deficit, and two more runs in the eighth inning to come within 10-7.
  • Yeaman was back at bat to start the bottom of the eighth inning off with a long home run down the left field line to make it an 11-7 game leading to a six-run eighth inning to seal the victory
  • Anteater pitching saw six different arms collect the team's 11th straight win and improved to 4-2 in midweek games this year
    • Ricky Ojeda set the tone with two scoreless innings in a controlled start striking out three and earning the victory
    • Ryan Kysar faced his old buddies again and could not replicate the shutout performance from March allowing two runs and striking out three in 1.2 innings
    • Jaxton Andeel took over for him and put up a shutout inning of work
    • Jack Ross had an extended outing going 2.1 innings allowing three runs on two long balls while striking out three
    • David Butler came on to settle things down and put up zeroes for the final two innings striking out four
  • The offense was paced by Yeaman and his three hits, three runs and four RBIs. He's up to 50 hits at the midway point of the season while leading the team with a .431 average, nine home runs, 39 RBIs, and 39 runs
    • Four other Anteaters had multi-hit games including Blake Penso with three hits
    • He was one of four others that also had multi-RBI games including Call's three RBIs from his home run
    • Jacob McCombs scored three times while going 1-for-1 and reaching on a walk and three times hit by pitch
The Anteaters depart on the road once again for their next six games, and it starts Friday, April 4 with a three-game series at No. 11 Oregon State.
