No. 13 'Eaters Deal 7-2 Win over LMU

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball snatched a 7-2 win in its final midweek game of the season downing LMU Tuesday night in Anteater Ballpark.
  • The game began with a 30-minute delay to fix an irrigation leak on the outfield warning track
  • In typical Tuesday fashion, the bullpens were well visited with a total of 21 pitchers used and 15 along from LMU
  • For a second straight game, the Anteater staff allowed just three hits with a fourth-inning single and a pair in the seventh
    • Danny Suarez got his second straight midweek start struggling out of the gate loading the bases without a hit, but bouncing back to strand two and allow just one run
    • Ryder Brooks relieved with two scoreless innings and pitched through a bases loaded jam in the third
    • Riley Kelly made the most waves Tuesday night with two scoreless innings allowing a hit while striking out four which was good enough for his first career collegiate win
    • The backend kept things moving with David Vizcaino punching out two in two innings, David Utagawa doing the same in the eighth, and Ricky Tibbett going 1-2-3 in the ninth
  • The 'Eaters trailed 1-0 before the bats got cooking in the second inning
    • A walk, HBP, and single loaded the bases before a wild pitch tied the game, 1-1
    • Abraham Garcia-Pacheco was productive with a groundball out to give UCI the 2-1 lead
  • A big third inning helped put distance between the sides all coming with two outs
    • An Anthony Martinez walk after two strikeouts kept the inning alive leading to a Dub Gleed walk
    • Will Bermudez flipped a double into right-center to make it a 3-1 ballgame
    • Chase Call beat out a fairly-routine grounder for another RBI to extend the inning
    • Jo Oyama made it a three-run frame with a single just over the second baseman to lead 5-1
  • The 'Eaters added two more in the fourth wasting no time as Woody Hadeen tripled home Myles Smith before coming home on a wild pitch to lead 7-1
  • The bottom four in the lineup accounted for 6 of the 9 hits and four RBIs
  • Dub Gleed scored twice, but was injured trying to beat out a groundball leaving in the fifth inning
  • The hit by pitch leaders in the nation got three more Tuesday night for a total of 149 that stands just three shy of the all-time NCAA single-season mark
  • UCI finishes with a 6-3 record in midweek games in 2024 and a 4-0 mark against WCC opponents
UCI looks next to a road weekend at Cal State Fullerton for the final away games of the regular season. First pitch Friday is at 6:30 p.m. as Nick Pinto and Mikiah Negrete square off at Goodwin Field.
