No. 19 Anteaters Fall to UConn, 5-0

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball was held in check for the first time in Anteater Ballpark this year dropping Wednesday night's game to UConn, 5-0.
  • The potent Anteater offense managed just two hits on the night with the first coming on an opposite-field single by Caden Kendle. The 'Eater offense was shutout for the first time in almost a calendar year.
  • UConn starter Ben Schild was the story no-hitting the Anteaters for 5.2 innings in his first career start. The freshman struck out nine Anteaters walking two with one hit by pitch to pick up his second when of 2024.
  • UCI had a second hit from Chase Call in the seventh inning and stranded all nine runners they put on base including bases loaded for the final out in the ninth.
  • The big hit came in the fifth inning for the Huskies as leadoff hitter Ryan Daniels launched a three-run home run to break the tie and put the visitors up, 3-0.
  • Six Anteaters pitchers threw on the night with starter Brandon Luu and relievers Tim Grack and Cameron Wheeler tossing shutout innings. Max Martin did not allow an earned run in his inning of work. Grack and Wheeler each struck out three hitters to lead the Anteaters.
UC Irvine will open Big West play on Friday, March 15 starting at 6:00 p.m. Their three-game series over the weekend comes against UC Davis as the Anteaters sport a 13-2 record.
