'Eaters Defeated by CSUB, 1-0
October 10, 2024 | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer dropped their first of a three-match home stretch Thursday night to Cal State Bakersfield, 1-0, in Anteater Stadium
The Anteaters were unable to sustain any consistent attack against the visiting Roadrunners with three shots and a pair of corners in the match. The 'Eaters were without a shot on goal as well. Cal State Bakersfield had eight shots in the match with many from distance that sailed high of keeper Ashley Naylor's goal. She made a pair of early saves with one coming on a curling corner kick that she punched off the bar and out finishing with three saves on the night.
The match's lone goal came for the Roadrunners in the 61st minute. A long feed ahead to Kim Garcia put her on the rush along the right wing. She put a shot on frame as she entered the 18-yard box, and got a fortunate result firing between Naylor's legs low and through to make it a 1-0 CSUB lead.
Both defenses held back the opponent's attack for the most part with just three corner kicks earned in the match as a whole. UCI's defense was three freshmen at the back for a majority of the match between Kori Pickelle, making her first career start, Milan Heisdorf, and Hailey Clingan. The 'Eaters were without the services of Kiera Smeenge from the fourth minute on after a hard tackle that drew a caution.
UCI has now dropped its last two matches to sit at 2-2-1 on seven points in Big West play. The Anteaters have a chance to turn it around with two more home matches on the horizon, and the next on Sunday, October 13, starting at 6:00 p.m. against Hawai'i who are unbeaten in Big West action.
