'Eaters End LBSU's Season in Penalty Kicks

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer advances through to the Big West Semifinals Sunday night at George Allen Field via a 4-1 win in a penalty kick shootout.
UC IRVINE 0, LONG BEACH STATE 0 (UCI ADVANCES ON PENALTY KICKS, 4-1)
The match ends in a draw to put UCI's record at 6-7-6 on the year, but the 'Eaters advance on penalties. Next up is a return to Titan Stadium where the 'Eaters won last year's Big West First Round matchup. UC Irvine and the No. 1-seed Titans match up in the semifinals with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, November 2.
UC IRVINE 0, LONG BEACH STATE 0 (UCI ADVANCES ON PENALTY KICKS, 4-1)
- The Black & Blue Rivalry Series returned for a second time this season after the sides drew, 1-1, in the regular season in a match also on LBSU's home field
- The sides were on point early on with nine shots in the first half between them and seven of them on target
- After a scoreless half, Long Beach State began the second half as the aggressors with multiple corners in the first five minutes
- Each side had chances with two shots on goal for the 'Eaters in the stanza, but still no scoring as the match went to overtime
- Action was end-to-end in both 10-minute overtime periods with each program looking for a winner. UCI had three shots to LBSU's two with one shot on goal, but still no scoring sending the match to a shootout
- The Anteaters had the first crack with Tati FungΒ netting her shot
- Glo Hinojosa gave UCI the advantage by saving Long Beach State's first penalty try
- After another UCI make, LBSU's second shooter nailed a shot off the left post
- Both sides made their third attempts putting Marissa LeVine on the spot to end it with a slow-rolling shot that snuck between the post and the diving keeper to win the shootout, 4-1
- Glo HinojosaΒ claimed her 28th career shutout on the night and second career shootout win. She now has seven career saves on penalty kicks including regulation and shootouts. Her four saves in the match give her 216 in her career
- The 'Eaters are now 2-1Β all-time in PK shootouts in the Big West Championships, 3-2Β in program history, and go to 4-2-3Β in Big West postseason overtime matches
- The Anteaters run their unbeaten streak to six matches, 3-0-3, against Long Beach State
- UCI finished with the advantage in shots, 14-10, and shots on goal, 7-4, while LBSU held the 6-5 edge in corner kicks
