'Eaters Jump Into Big West Race with 2-0 Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer got a much-needed Big West victory Sunday night in Anteater Stadium defeating UC Riverside, 2-0.

UC IRVINE 2, UC RIVERSIDE 0
  • UC Riverside came out with the match's first shot in the second minute before the 'Eaters took hold of the attack finishing the match with a 16-2 edge in shots
  • The Anteaters' first shot was almost perfect from the foot of Alyssa Moore who smashed a shot off the left post in the seventh minute
  • Again the 'Eaters were denied by the woodwork in the 27th minute as a ball rolled through the box to Madison Goerlinger who returned fire and hit the crossbar
  • UCI had a few more chances blocked before getting a call right before the half
  • A foul at the edge of the box on Autumn Thompkins was awarded as a penalty to UCI with exactly one minute to go. Aislynn Crowder stepped to the spot and beat the keeper to make it a 1-0 Anteater lead
  • The Highlanders came out of the break on the front foot earning an early corner kick and hovering around the box
  • Tati Fung and Chloe Ragon each had golden opportunities, but put shots just wide
  • In the 62nd minute, UCI earned a free kick just inside their own half, and a quick restart from Gianna Creighton hit Alyssa Moore in the box who settled the service and blasted her second touch off the crossbar and this time over the goalline for a goal and a 2-0 lead
  • UCR looked to respond quick with corners and their second shot, but the Anteater defense held
  • Anteater contributions ranged from 12 different players accounting for the 16 shots
  • Glo Hinojosa made one save on the lone UCR shot on target as she collected her 26th career shutout and win No. 32
  • Crowder's goal is the first of her collegiate career in her 51st match along with her first points of 2023, and goes down as a game-winning goal
  • Creighton notched her second assist of the season and fourth in her career while playing in her 78th career match, a mark that ties her for fifth-most in program history with Tanya Taylor and Simone Ferrara
  • Alyssa Moore continues to rack up the goals now with 18 in her career and 43 career points. She matches her single-season high scoring her sixth goal of the year, the same amount she had in each of the 2021 and 2022 seasons
  • Milestones were hit for Chloe Ragon and Suus de Bakker who each started tonight and played in their 50th career matches as Anteaters, accounting as the 102nd and 103rd Anteaters to reach 50 in program history
