July 27, 2020 | Baseball
During the month of July, UC Irvine Athletics is highlighting some of the top team performances of the 2019-20 academic year presented by UCI Health.
'Eaters Produce Complete Victory at UW
From start to finish, UC Irvine baseball owned the day at Husky Ballpark as the season's first month came to a close. A tough tussle the night before saw UCI on the short end of a loss to start the series at Washington. Saturday's action began with the first hitter. Jake Palmer, reaching base and scoring as part of a three-run opening frame.
A newcomer to the club, Josh Sheck, provided a big boost of offense driving home two of those first-inning runs and supplying two more in the fifth inning for a three-RBI day. Fellow freshman Luke Spillane knocked three hits and drove a run home in two of those giving a huge runway for Peter Van Loon to work. The junior was able to wrangle up his first career win with all the run support, but decided to put on a clinic of his own shutting out the Pac-12 foe through seven innings whole allowing just five hits to go with five strikeouts accented by some superior defensive work from Mike Peabody in center field who piled onto his day of three hits and three runs scored.
The win was tightly-sealed with a huge, ninth-inning punctuation off the bat of Adrian Damla who made his only hit count with a towering home run through the wind and inside the right field pole for two of his three RBI and sewing up the 9-0 victory.
