IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball history has made its mark in the last 20 years since returning to the field, and the outlets at NCAA Baseball and ESPN will feature the Anteaters on social media in the next few days.
The baseball history begins Saturday as ESPN is putting out a call to find the greatest all-time college baseball players. Votes are through ESPN.com and coincides with programming on ESPNU showing noteworthy college baseball games of the past. The Anteaters are represented in the vote as 2004-07 closer Blair Erickson will be on the ballot for greatest collegiate relief pitcher.
Erickson pitched 113 career games for the Anteaters in his four years, primarily as a reliever with a career record of 7-5 with a 2.80 ERA and 192 strikeouts. He recorded 53 saves over his career which is not only an Anteater record, but is still the NCAA record for saves. Erickson was pivotal in the 'Eaters' 2007 run to the College World Series where he picked up 13 saves for his fourth season with at least 10 saves.
Erickson will be on the relief pitcher ballot alongside greats Matt Anderson, David Berg, Darren Dreifort, Danny Graves, Gregg Olson, Matt Price, and Huston Street. The vote is ongoing for the entire team, but the vote for relief pitchers will open Saturday, June 20 and go through Monday, June 22. Here is the ballot to vote.
The festivities continue on Sunday, June 21 as the 'Eaters are part of the NCAA's schedule of re-airing past College World Series games during what would have been the 2020 College World Series.
UCI's amazing 2014 run to its second Division I College World Series culminated in the tournament's opening game on June 14, 2014 with a victory over Texas. The NCAA will be re-airing the broadcast with a live stream on their Facebook and Twitter accounts along with shared on the UC Irvine Facebook and Twitter accounts starting at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The Anteater social media accounts will be watching along and encourage the fans to join the conversation with fellow baseball alums around the excitement that was the 2014 CWS.
