STORYLINES
Anteater seniors hit a few milestones starting with Carley Brown making starts in each match to give her 50 career matches played for the Anteaters, the 88th player in program history. She added her first career point assisting on Scarlett Camberos' goal on Friday to open the scoring vs. Arizona State. Aleah Kelley and Jessica Miclat each played in their 60th career match out in Tucson as well.
UCI was flooded with firsts, notably Sunday vs. Northern Colorado when Scarlett Camberos and Julia Gonzalez each scored their first career goals and points to defeat Northern Colorado for the team's first goals and win of 2019. In addition, true freshman Taesja Paopao played in her first career match earning the start and scoring the win while securing her first four career saves. Lauren McKimmey made her first collegiate appearance Friday in her third year and played wonderfully on the backline totaling 121 minutes over both matches
UC Irvine's freshman influence is evident with eight players making their collegiate debuts while five Anteaters recorded their first ever collegiate start. Freshmen account for 28% of minutes played thus far, nearly equaling all minutes by upperclassmen. First and second-year Anteaters have registered 70% of the program's minutes here in 2019
UCI has taken on a pair of ranked opponents both No. 9 in the nation in Virginia and Vanderbilt, the first time they've encountered two ranked opponents since 2014. UCI opened with a 7-0 loss in their first trip to Virginia, the fourth time ever allowing seven or more goals, first since 1987, and first time a coach Juniper squad had allowed more than four goals in a match. UCI also had a ranked opponent on its exhibition slate falling, 2-1, to UCLA who was ranked No. 4 in the preseason
With a win or drawβ¦
...it would snap a string of six straight matches without a win vs. the Pac-12 dating back to a neutral site win vs. Oregon in 2017
...UCI would improve on its record of 8-17-5 against Pac-12 schools under head coach Scott Juniper. A Scott Juniper-coached squad has earned a win or draw in all eight seasons where its played multiple Pac-12 programs and will play three in 2019
...on Sunday, it would improve on its record of 2-3 all-time against the Big 12 which includes a 1-0 loss to Iowa State earlier this season
CAL GOLDEN BEARS
UC Irvine takes on its third straight unbeaten Pac-12 opponent when it hosts 5-0 Cal Friday night, and the second straight opponent that has yet to give up a goal with a 13-0 score line against programs like UCSB, SDSU, and USD. Head Coach Neil McGuire has taken the Bears to the postseason in all 12 of his seasons there except last year winning just five matches and one in conference play. Emma Westin (5 G) and Luca Deza (3 G) lead the attack this year while keeper Angelina Anderson has needed to stop just four shots to this point. UCI is searching for its first win vs. Cal, 0-10-1 all-time with a road draw in 2010 as the only result. The teams last played in 2017, a 2-1 Cal win, while the Bears are 4-0 all-time in Anteater Stadium last visiting in 2013 where they beat UCI, 3-1, to open the season
TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS
UC Irvine will take a quick trip to Pullman, Washington to take part in the Cougar Classic to finish the weekend. UCI is stepping in for a program that backed out of the tournament and will face Texas Tech on Sunday. The Red Raiders began the year ranked No. 22 and smashed SDSU, 6-1, but a loss to New Mexico knocked them from the rankings. Since then, they've won their next four and not allowed a goal. UCI and TTU meet for the first time in just the seventh matchup between UCI and the Big 12. Junior Kirsten Davis paves the way with six goals and four assists thus far, and Marissa Zucchetto has needed to stop 11 shots as part of her four shutouts
