Β
STORYLINES
UC Irvine's freshman influence was evident seven players making their collegiate debuts over the weekend while four Anteaters recorded their first ever collegiate start
UC Irvine fell by a combined score of 8-0 in their openers against No. 9 Virginia and Iowa State. The seven goals allowed to Virginia are just the fourth time in program history allowing seven or more in a match, three off the record of 10 allowed back in 1985
The Anteaters allowed five goals in a match for the first time under coach Juniper. The last such match came in a 5-0 defeat to CSUN in 2006 under head coach April Heinrichs
The preseason polls for the Big West came out with UC Irvine projected to finish third much like 2018 when UCI finished third and reachedΒ the conference tournament for a second straight season.
UCI had three players on the Preseason All-Big West squad in Aleah Kelley, Jessica Miclat, and Maddie Newsom, eclipsing the two total preseason honorees from the last four years combined
UCI will have their first career meeting with Vanderbilt. The last SEC opponent were Auburn and Texas A&M back in 2015. UCI and Northern Colorado match up for the first time since 2007 and third time in their histories
With a win or drawβ¦
...it would snap a string of five straight matches without a win dating back to 2018 where the 'Eaters are 0-4-1 in those games
...it would give UCI its fourth result against an SEC school having won a single game vs. Texas A&M, Auburn, and Mississippi State
...this will be the first result against a ranked opponent since UCI dropped No. 6 BYU on the road, 1-0, on Sept. 14, 2013 as UCI enters at 6-9-1 all-time vs. ranked schools, 3-2 in Anteater Stadium, and 5-8-1 under coach Juniper
VANDERBILT COMMODORES
Vanderbilt started the year ranked 17th with opposite success from UCI in its opening weekend winning games 7-0 over Georgia State and 4-0 over Evansville back home to boost them to a No. 9 rank. Vandy opens its road slate this year and will mark just the fourth game in Anteater Stadium with an SEC opponent joining Auburn twice and Texas A&M. Vanderbilt finished 2018 ranked No. 16 with a record of 16-4-1, an SEC conference title, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. They were picked to finish third in the preseason poll, but won last year's title even when tabbed to finish ninth. Haley Hopkins leads the Dores as a MAC Hermann Trophy watch list candidate starting with two goals in each win as well as a hat trick from Paola Ellis, and Vanderbilt outshot their opponents 48-4.
NORTHERN COLORADO BEARS
The Bears and Anteaters strike up their matchup for the third time ever and first time since 2007. The team split the two previous meetings in their histories, and battle in Irvine for the first time. Tim Barrera continues to head UNC as he has for the past 23 seasons, and his program has won 10 or more matches five straight years. After a 12-win campaign and conference tournament final, UNC was picked to finish atop the Big Sky, started 2019 off with a 1-1 draw with SIU Edwardsville, and will travel to Wyoming (Wednesday) and Cal State Fullerton (Friday) before settling in Irvine. Taylor Bray (6 G, 4 A) and Lexi Pulley (7 G, 5 A) lead the returners who knocked in 40 goals as a team in 2018. Taylor Washington is back between the pipes after playing nearly every minute of 2018 and returns home to Southern California along with four of her teammates.
