June 18, 2019 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. --- The baseball publications have rolled through during the tailend of the season with pitchers Trenton Denholm and Taylor Rashi picking up notable accolades from the 2019 campaign.
Both Anteaters were noticed as All-Americans led by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper that recognized the duo on their Third Team. Rashi also scored Third Team honors as an All-American with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Denholm claimed another honor in All-West Region status according to American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) as UCI's lone representative. All this on the heels of being named Big West Pitcher of the Year in the conference, the sixth in program history, as he topped the Big West in ERA, innings, and opposing batting average allowed along with high marks in strikeouts, WHIP, and wins sporting a 9-4 record.
Rashi was recently selected in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft as a 28th-round pick of the San Francisco Giants capping off a marvelous year and career. The team's closer finished second in the league with 12 saves helping him to be recognized on the Stopper of the Year midseason watch list according to the College Baseball Hall of Fame. He stifled hitters with 56 strikeouts to seven walks allowing 12 earned runs all season and just one out of the bullpen to go 5-1 which included a program-record 32.2 scoreless inning streak that dates back to his junior season.
The honors were the first for either player in their careers as they become the sixth pair of 'Eaters to earn All-American distinction in the same season on the Division I level and first since 2014 when Andrew Morales and Taylor Sparks made the grade. It is the third consecutive season an Anteater has reached All-American heights totaling all-time in the program and 21 at the Division I level.
