May 27, 2019 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball snagged its 12th Big West weekly award this season after an insane season finale by junior shortstop Christian Koss.
Koss reached base all seven times Saturday while going 6-for-6 with six runs scored in a titanic 22-7 victory Saturday over UC Riverside. The six hits are just the third time in UCI history in a game for a player while he recorded the first-ever game with six runs scored. Koss added a home run, a double, two RBI, and a stolen base all in front of friends and family in his hometown of Riverside.
On the week Koss finished an even .500 going 10-for-20 with seven runs scored, four RBI, a pair of stolen bases, lifted his career-long hit streak to 15 games, just the 15th 'Eater with a streak of 15 or more, and countless defensive gems to help the 'Eaters win three of four games, secure their 13th weekend series win, and vault into a tie for second place in the Big West with a 17-7 record, the sixth time UCI finished second or higher and just the third time with as many as 17 conference victories.
UCI's program record grew to 12 Big West Player of the Week honors with Christian's haul Monday. The award is the first over Koss' career making it the fifth for a UC Irvine Field Player in 2019 joining Brandon Lewis' two, Jake Palmer, and Mike Peabody.
UC Irvine finished with a 37-17 overall record going 21-5 at home, winning 16 road games, and 12 wins against top conferences including a 7-3 mark against the Pac-12
