IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team returns to action after a one-month hiatus as it travels to Santa Cruz for the 72nd annual Western Intercollegiate, April 7-8.
The Anteaters should be familiar with this weekend's par-70, 6,615-yard course as they have competed in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club every year since 2010.
Thirty-six holes will be contested on Saturday, while the final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on both days. The tournament will feature a six-player format with the top five scores from each round counting toward the team total.
The 'Eaters are part of an elite field with 10 of the 15 teams ranked among Golfstat's top-50 this week. The Anteaters will be competing against No. 9 Cal, No. 14 Texas, No. 18 Stanford, No. 20 North Carolina, No. 21 USC, No. 25 Oregon, No. 32 Pepperdine, No. 33 Arizona, No. 42 Colorado State, No. 50 San Diego State, Hawai'i, UTEP, Washington and host San Jose State.

UC Irvine was last in action March 5-6 at the Sacramento State Invitational in Elk Grove, Calif. Senior David Kim led the way with his second runner-up finish of the year. He was the only golfer to record two sub-70 rounds after carding a tournament-best 66 (-6) in the second round and a 69 (-3) over the final 18. Kim, who totaled 15 birdies, finished with a 54-hole score of 4-under 212.
Senior Jonathan Young posted his first top-10 performance of the 2017-18 campaign, coming in seventh overall at 1-over 217 (73-71-73). Sophomore Jonathan Kang tied for 23rd with a three-round total of 222 (72-77-73), while junior Ramiz Jamal climbed four spots on the final day to tie for 28th with a 224 (74-76-74). Senior Ryan O'Connor wasn't far behind in 30th as he shot three consecutive rounds of 3-over 75 (225).
The Anteaters had their best finish as a team, placing third overall at 871 (294-288-289). They were only one stroke back of Grand Canyon and Long Beach State, which tied for first. The Lopes ended up claiming the championship via a tiebreaker. LBSU's Joe Fryer was individual medalist at 6-under 210 as he was only two strokes ahead of David Kim.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Through seven tournaments, senior David Kim leads the 'Eaters with three eagles, 71 birdies and a 72.33 scoring average.
• Kim recorded the first hole-in-one of his collegiate career in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course (Lihu'e, Kaua'i). His ace came with a six-iron on the 178-yard seventh hole.
• The hole-in-one gave him a big boost in the round as he ended up going 5-under on the final four holes for a season-best 66 (-6).
• Kim went on to match that performance with another 6-under 66 in the second round of the Sacramento State Invitational. He was the only golfer to post two sub-70 rounds in the tournament as he recorded a total score of 212 (77-66-69) to claim his second runner-up honor of the year. It was his 14th career top-10 performance.
• Kim's 66 bettered his previous season-low by one stroke as he also shot a 67 through the first 18 of the Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 2. So far this season, he has seven rounds of 70 or better.
• Kim earned his second career Big West Men's Golfer of the Month award for his efforts in October. He was the runner-up at the Bill Cullum Invitational, 18th at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational and 30th at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational. The reigning Big West Player of the Year was at under-par scoring in five of nine rounds played. Three of those came at the Bill Cullum Invite where Kim had rounds of 71, 70 and 68 for a 54-hole season-best of 209 (-7).
• Senior Jonathan Young is coming off a career-best seventh-place finish at the Sacramento State Invitational. He had his most consistent outing with rounds of 73, 71 and 73 to tie his season-best total of 217 (+1). It was his first top-10 performance of the year.
• Young also recorded back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to tie for 21st at the Bill Cullum Invitational (217).
• Senior Ryan O'Connor had his best finish of the 2017-18 campaign at the Waves Challenge where he came in 16th (231). The Irvine native was also the Anteaters' co-leader at the Nick Watney Invitational, recording a 223 to tie for 30th. He carded a then season-best 73 in the third round to jump 14 spots in the standings on the final day.
• O'Connor matched his career-low of 71 in the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (Feb. 15).
• Sophomore Jonathan Kang has played in six of seven tournaments this year, carding a season-best 220 (75-71-74) at the Saint Mary's Invitational. He also tied for 23rd at the Sacramento State Invitational and tied for 25th at the Waves Challenge.
• Junior Ramiz Jamal shot a career-low 69 in the first round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational and went on to finish with a season-best 216 (E) to tie for 35th. Jamal added a top-30 showing at the Sacramento State Invitational.
• Head coach Paul Smolinski is in his 20th year at the helm of the UCI men's golf program and the long-time coach has a veteran squad this year with eight returners, including five seniors.

UC Irvine heads to Tempe, Ariz., next weekend for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, April 14-15. It will be the Anteaters' final tune-up before the Big West Championships at Industry Hills Golf Course (April 30-May 1).
