SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team was in 14th place when the second round was suspended due to darkness at the 72nd annual Western Intercollegiate Saturday at Pasatiempo Golf Course.
The 'Eaters were in ninth after totaling a 6-count-5 first-round score of 358, but dropped five spots through the first part of the second round. No. 20 North Carolina finished the day at the top of the leaderboard, just three strokes ahead of No. 50 San Diego State.
Sophomore Jonathan Kang was tied for 11th after firing a season-low 69 (-1) in the opening round. He had three birdies, including two over the final four holes. Kang would see a significant drop in the second round, however, as he was at 9-over with four holes left to play.
Senior David Kim also found himself among the top-20 following first-round action as he tied for 18th at even-par 70. Kim remained at par through seven more holes, but fell into a tie for 21st in the standings.
Junior Ramiz Jamal sat in 35th with a first-round 2-over 72, while senior Chris Parkinson carded a 3-over 73 (53rd) in his season debut. Senior Ryan O'Connor was also 63rd, shooting a 4-over 74. Jamal and Parkinson went on to end the day in a tie for 82nd, and O'Connor was 74th. Senior Jonathan Young is tied for 89th.
Arizona's George Cunningham and Texas' Scottie Scheffler are in a tie for first at 7-under with play resuming tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. The final 18 holes will be contested immediately following the conclusion of the second round.
