FIRST TOUCHES
110 -Β In the last four seasons, Arizona has been held scoreless at home just four times, three Coming at the hands of Pac-12 opponents. UCI became the first non-conference team to shut them out in that time and first to do it over 110 minutes through two overtime periods
12th -Β Monday night's brace from Kiana Palacios gave her 20 career goals making her the 12th Anteater to reach 20-goal mark. Her next point will be her 50th all-time and make her the 12th Anteater to reach the 50-point plateau
1st -Β Two Anteaters recorded their 1st career points in Monday's win as Jonnae Joseph and Kelsee Pottorff dropped in their first assists playing in their 43rd and 30th career matches, respectively
LAST WEEK RECAP
UCI finished up their run of Pac-12 schools with another impressive performance despite putting up a scoreless draw. Arizona's high-powered offense had been shutout just three times in the last four years and never by a non-conference opponent until Friday when UCI held them at bay for 110 minutes, something none of those Pac-12 schools could do. Noel Baham had 2 of UCI's 3 shots with one on frame while Maddie Newsom came through with four saves including two consecutively in the 79th minute to preserve the shutout.
Β
Monday night, the Anteater offense finally got going with a 3-0 victory in the home opener over Portland. Kiana Palacios buried a pair of highlight-reel goals and Baham added a goal and assist. The defense continued to show their muscle as well not allowing a corner kick and just two shots total, none through the first 50 minutes.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
A pair of Eastern teams grace Anteater Stadium this week in a pair of matches that preclude men's games as part of doubleheaders.
Β
First up are the Penn Quakers straight from the Ivy League. Penn has lost a pair of 1-0 matches to Lehigh and La Salle as it makes its way out West to face UCI and UC Riverside. The 2016 Quakers were 9-3-4 with a spotless road record (5-0-2) and finished fourth in the highly-competitive Ivy League. UC Irvine and Penn will face off for the first time, but UCI does have a brief history with the Ivy League going 1-0-1 with Columbia and winning its most recent match in 2012 coming from behind late to beat Princeton, 2-1. Penn was a defensive stalwart allowing 10 goals in total last season while scoring 31. Sophomore keeper Kitty Qu returns after playing 16 matches to the tune of a 0.51 GAA. Their three leading scorers also return in Emily Sands (4 G, 6 A), Sasha Stephens (4 G, 6 A), and Emma Loving (6 G, 3 GWG).
Β
UCI completes Labor Day weekend with a visit from the Toledo Rockets. The schools met twice with UCI winning each, most recently a 3-0 win in 2000. Toledo drew with Detroit, defeated Canisius, 2-0, and most recently dropped to No. 23 Michigan, 0-1, early on coming off an 8-10-1 season in the MAC. They're searching for a goalscorer to replace Kiersten Johnson's 10 goals from 2016. Isa Echeverri returns after netting four goals last season, and minutes leaders Chiara Paradiso and Sheridan Bufe are also back in front of new keeper Madison Perrin who has made 13 saves and allowed single goal thus far.
LUCKY DUCKS
UC Irvine has made an addition to its 2017 schedule bringing Pac-12 opponent Oregon into Anteater Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday, September 10.
Β
The Ducks are down a match after having to cancel its Saturday, August 26 match at Texas A&M as Hurricane Harvey beared down on Texas. UCI and Oregon met on a neutral site as part of a tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton last season where UCI returned from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to net the game-winner in the 88th minute for the 3-2 victory.
