Samis, Anteaters Triumph 2-1 in Overtime

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was rewarded for its efforts Sunday evening with a win in overtime, 2-1, over the host UC Riverside Highlanders.
UCI (6-7-0, 2-0-0) returned to the winning track over the weekend with a pair of Big West conference wins topping it off with an overtime win over UCR (5-6-2, 0-2-0).
Jackie Samis made it two straight weekends with a goal as she settled a Mady Solow corner kick in the 98th minute and drained it to a match that UCI controlled in every aspect.
The Anteaters finished with a 22-7 shot advantage over the Highlanders led by Natalia Ledezma who had seven.
Corey Tobin stood tall in net earning the victory. She made a clutch save in the 90th minute to keep the score tied and send the match into overtime. Tobin ended with two saves.
The rest of the scoring came early in the match. UCI jumped on the board first as Rachel Wood converted a penalty kick goal in the 10th minute.
UC Riverside countered in the 14th minute as Andrea Luttio bombed a free kick from the top of the box that barred down and in to tie it.
Samis' goal was her first career game-winner. Solow notched her first assist of the season while Wood's goal was her second of the season.
For UCI, they jump to the top of the Big West standings with its pair of wins on the weekend. Overall, they are 6-7-0 and return home next weekend for a pair of matches. Cal Poly visits Friday, October 5th for a 7:00 p.m. match followed by UCSB on Sunday, October 7th at 1:00 p.m.
