IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team went 2-0 in a Friday doubleheader, sweeping Navy, 7-0, before defeating Army, 4-3, at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UCI improved to 6-5 on the season. Navy fell to 15-14, while Army dropped to 12-6.

In the morning match, the 'Eaters wasted no time setting the tone in doubles play. The No. 3 pairing ofÂ
Mason Bui and
Ruining Huang got things rolling with a convincing 6-2 victory over Navy's Steve Nguyen and Daniel Seo. Right behind them,Â
Tal Goodman and
Hiroki Sakagawa surged past George Cutone and J.J. Etterbeek on court two with a 7-5 decision to clinch the doubles point for the Anteaters.

UC Irvine took that momentum into singles, where it delivered a clean sweep across all six courts.
Tal Goodman got it started at the fourth position where he dismantled Lachlan Buckingham, 6-1, 6-0.
Max Fardanesh followed with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Charlie Spencer at No. 2.

Hiroki Sakagawa continued his strong day, defeating Jake Young 6-2, 6-3 at the top of the lineup, while
Nathaniel Suh took down Ethan Garcia, 6-4, 6-2, at the fifth spot. It was Suh's first singles victory in his second dual-match appearance.

Alex Guajardo added a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Zachary Quattro on court six. The final match sawÂ
Sohrob Amiryavari grind out a hard-fought second-set tiebreaker over Jason Kim, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4) to complete the sweep.

In the second match of the doubleheader, UC Irvine held off a late push by Army for a 4-3 victory.

The Anteaters once again took control in doubles with a pair of dominant performances.
Tal Goodman and
Hiroki Sakagawa shut out Matias Feoli/Jimin Jung, 6-0, on court two, before
Max Fardanesh and
Rohan Sachdev sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Daniel Choi/Jack Hanna at No. 1.
Sohrob Amiryavari and
Alex Guajardo were also up 5-3 when their match was abandoned.

UCI continued to roll in the early stages of singles, building a 3-0 lead.
Greg Gamal got things started on court five with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Davis McDonald.
Ruining Huang followed with a composed 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Daniel Choi at the fourth position.

Army then mounted a comeback, winning three close decisions. At No. 6, Marcus Sebastian pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win over
Nathaniel Suh. Jimin Jung kept the pressure on by grinding out back-to-back tiebreaker wins over
Tal Goodman, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), at the second spot. The Black Knights then tied it up as Alan Ton outlasted
Sohrob Amiryavari on court three, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4.

The deciding point came down to the top of the lineup where
Max Fardanesh rose to the occasion. Fardanesh took the opening set against Jackson Armistead, 6-4, before dropping the second, 5-7. He then dug deep to close it out in the third, delivering the 7-5 victory for the match-clinching point.

UC Irvine will close out its four-match homestand on Saturday, March 14, when it hosts Air Force at 12 p.m.
