Playing For Keeps
- The match got going with the visiting Matadors setting the tone and on the attack. They offered up the match's first two shots and corners within the first eight minutes.
- Fiona Shin provided a shot from distance in the 11th minute and CSUN responded with one later that minute with both needing a save.
- The scoring began in the 20th minute
- A foul well near the edge of the 18-yard box by Savanna Arruda on Jordyn Canister put her at the spot, and she chose correct on her shot to put CSUN ahead, 1-0.
- The rest of the half played out with little on the offensive side. The 'Eaters earned a flurry of corners in the 34th minute, but did not manage any more shots.
- The weather continued through the intermission and steadily throughout the second half.
- UCI was knocking on the door early including Mimi Dominguez gaining position and putting up a shot that was blocked and began a rush the other way.
- CSUN's Canister was leading the attack and sent one ahead to Ariana Lopez-Angel. She found daylight and hit the back of the net on the counter to make it a 2-0 CSUN lead in the 54th minute.
- UC Irvine gained back some life following a throw-in in the 58th minute.
- Mimi Yamamoto ran onto a ball on the right wing and served up a picturesque cross to the back post to the waiting Shin whose header back across goal settled in for the score and UCI now down, 2-1
- CSUN hardly let UCI breathe back on the attack 34 seconds later as Lopez-Angel tried a shot from outside the box that was blocked, but the rebound fell to her and she got it to go inside the far post and push the lead back to 3-1.
- Both attacks kept the momentum bearing down on goal, and another goal looked like it went in at the 74th minute.
- A cross from the right wing to the goalmouth was put on frame by Keira Baranski and saved, and Yamamoto followed with a shot in for the goal.
- A video review determined that a handball in the box by UCI came before the goal to reverse the ruling and keep the match at 3-1.
- The Matadors didn't let that stop them as in the 75th minute, play along the left wing led to a cross bounding through traffic to Michelle Monroy who sliced a shot on the outside of her foot and inside the far post with nothing the Anteater defense could do now staring at a 4-1 deficit.
- UCI continued to make the Matadors work including a solid shot from Dominguez saved in the 77th minute, and quality attempts by Chifumi Sasaki all denied before getting to goal.
- Fiona Shin reemerged in the 89th minute on brilliant short passing at the edge of the box to curl one over the leaping keeper and turn the score to 4-2 before the final minutes ticked down.
- The Anteaters did all they could with 13 of their 15 shots in the second half, and finishing with more than CSUN's 13 on the match.
- Fiona Shin had a career night with her first career brace and a career high in points with four. She now has five goals and 12 points to lead the Anteaters this year.
- Mimi Yamamoto was just as valuable helping set up both Shin goals with assists with her first career multi-assist match. She's up to three assists and five points this season, and she added a goal in the match that was taken off the board.
- Allison Rabe set up Shin's second goal with the primary assist. The assist and point for Rabe were each the first of her career
- Savanna Arruda in net collected three saves in the match
- UC Irvine earned 11 corner kicks in the match reaching double digits for the second time this season
