May 24, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team wrapped up action at the NCAA West First Round Friday at John McDonnell Field.

Junior Jacob Hawkins and senior Justin Willingham competed in the discus, while sophomore Kenechukwu Okonkwo represented the Anteaters in the triple jump.

Hawkins finished 27th in the discus with a toss of 54.39 meters (178-5). He ended an impressive season in which he broke a 41-year-old school record with a lifetime-best 59.03m (193-8) at the Challenge Cup. Hawkins was also a two-time All-Big West performer, claiming the conference title in the discus and taking third in the shot put.

Willingham closed out his collegiate career with a 30th-place showing in the discus. The senior will leave UCI ranked first in program history in the shot put (18.74m/61-5.75) and seventh in the discus (54.87m/180-0). He broke the shot put school record four times this season, last accomplishing the feat at the Big West Championships where he brought home the Anteaters' third conference title in the last four years.

Both Hawkins and Willingham were also NCAA West First Round qualifiers in the shot put which was contested on Wednesday.

In the triple jump, sophomore Kenechukwu Okonkwo opened with a leap of 14.60m (47-10.75). That stood as his best through three rounds and was 36th in the competition. Okonkwo, who joined the program in April, was a Big West scorer and made his way up to No. 3 on UCI's all-time charts with a lifetime-best 15.33m (50-3.5) at the Steve Scott Invitational.

The season will continue for Josh Farmer, who is set to represent the UC Irvine men's track & field team in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships, June 5-8, at Hayward Field.
