September 14, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Another dead heat in the Black & Blue Rivalry Series between UC Irvine women's soccer and Long Beach State as the programs tied, 1-1, Thursday night at George Allen Field in the opener of Big West play
UC IRVINE 1, LONG BEACH STATE 1
The 'Eaters are done for the week as they hit the pitch next on Thursday, September 21 back in Anteater Stadium against UC Santa Barbara with kickoff at 6:00 p.m.
UC IRVINE 1, LONG BEACH STATE 1
- The hosts began with the match's first four shots including one on target and three corners all in the first nine minutes
- UCI's first shot of the match was on target and a goal as Tati Fung's long ball hit Alyssa Moore mid-stride who took it, danced between defenders, and rolled a shot inside the left post from 30 yards out to put the Anteaters on top, 1-0, in the 12th minute
- The 'Eaters went on the attack with the next three shots before LBSU put up a close call near the end of the half on a header from Bella Ternero just over the bar
- UCI returned from halftime on top 1-0, and Glo Hinojosa was put to the test right away with her second save of the match just five seconds into the stanza
- Each side put shots up with Hinojosa and LBSU's keeper turning them away as the half rolled along
- A pivotal moment came in the 72nd minute as a set piece near the halfway line was lifted and bounded through the box as Hinojosa leapt to snag it and was taken out by a charging Beach attacker. Hinojosa lay on the turf for a few minutes and needed to be bandaged up before eventually staying in the match
- As the 82nd minute approached, Long Beach State found a seam lifting a ball over the Anteater defense and onto Julia Moore who managed to stay onside and beat HinojosaΒ to her right for the tying goal, 1-1
- The final minutes played out with both defenses standing tall to put any thoughts of a win for either side to rest.
- Each side claims a point in their first Big West match of 2023 and the 'Eaters remain unbeaten in their last five matches against LBSU, 4-0-1, and even all-time in road matches, 5-5-6, and still ahead in the all-time series, 15-9-8
- Alyssa Moore was the night's goalscorer with her fifth of the season, 17th of her career, and first against LBSU
- Tati Fung earned another assist, her fourth in the last five matches, as she's matched her total from last year at four
- HinojosaΒ remains unbeaten all-time against Long Beach State and picked up three saves to give her 192 for her career and put her all alone in fifth in UCI history as the tie between her and Amee Chapman that stood at the beginning of the match was broken
