IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer went up against No. 11 Stanford in Anteater Stadium Saturday night falling by a single goal, 2-1.

#11 STANFORD 2, UC IRVINE 1

The match originally scheduled for Sunday, August 20, was moved up a day to avoid the hurricane bearing down on California
The Anteaters got on the front foot with a goal in the fifth minute as Desiree Mendoza's corner kick floated to Erin Covey who put it in the back of the net, 1-0

The Cardinal returned fire quickly with a goal in the eighth minute as Shae Harvey collected a ball in the mixer and finished inside the right post, 1-1
The teams came out of the half still even before the deciding goal was scored from Joelle Jung in the 62nd minute
UC Irvine kept pace in chances including winning the corner kick battle, 8-6
Glo Hinojosa stood on her head with five saves and many of them on a dive

Stanford was making their second visit to UC Irvine all-time, the other was a 0-0 draw in 1988
UCI's goal was it's first against Stanford in the fourth all-time matchup
The 'Eaters are now 3-2 in their last five matches vs. Pac-12 opponents dating back to 2021

UCI finishes the opening week of the season 1-1-0 with two more home matches next week against Pacific Thursday evening and Sunday night vs. No. 1 UCLA.
