'Eaters Post Shutouts in Exhibition Matches

August 15, 2022

UC Irvine women's soccer finished up a week of exhibitions on the road traveling to Cal Poly Pomona and San Diego not allowing a goal in preseason work.

A familiar lineup to Anteater fans to start the game Tuesday morning in Pomona with transfer Tati Fung making her debut in the midfield. A hard fought game with both teams creating chances to win it, but neither squad managing to convert. For the Anteaters, everyone who was healthy stepped in the field with many players making their debuts.

"Cal Poly Pomona are a very well-coached group," stated Anteater head coach Scott Juniper, "and we were happy to have such a great game to help prep the squad. They made it hard for us throughout, and I think we could have lost it a couple times. Everyone got to play which was a goal for us, and it gave us many looks at different combinations up and down the pitch."

A second away trip and another shutout to wrap up the week for the 2022 Anteaters came Friday night at San Diego. Laila El Behery, Alex Jaquez, and Desiree Mendoza all had good chances early in the game. Sophie Gillies spun to her left inside the box and hit the target, but the Toreros were resilient. A deft pass with the outside of the foot from Gillies found Autumn Thompkins who drove into the box and slotted it home to go up, 1-0. It remained that way through 90 minutes. In the extra 20-minute period came with more good looks to the whole of the roster and bench. The twins of Ella Colombini and Mia Colombini combined several times before Ella found Mia for goal number two on the match.

"I thought we were pretty good going forward tonight, loads of energy from back to front, and two shutouts in a week is something we have been working hard for."

The goal scorers were each excited after their performances. "Felt good to get pay back for the goal I missed last year on that same field in preseason," Thompkins added. "Makes me excited for my growth and ready to continue it alongside such a talented team."

Mia Colombini reacted to her first goal as an Anteater saying "scoring my first collegiate goal was super exciting and having my twin sister Ella make the assist made it even more special.

The regular season is next on the docket with a grudge match set for Thursday night, August 18, in Anteater Stadium against Pac-12 foe, the Cal Golden Bears.
