
El Behery, Miclat Set for National Team Play

IRVINE, Calif. --- A pair of women's soccer Anteaters past and present will represent their national team squads this month as qualifiers for various tournaments kick off around the world. Fans can stay updated with all the action and results from the matches here as well as UC Irvine women's soccer social media channels.
First up is 'Eater alum Jessica Miclat rejoining the Philippines as they look to qualify for the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup. The tournament itself will begin in January of 2022 with eight open spots remaining, and is the tournament to determine the five Asian countries to make the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Philippines will have a chance to claim one of those spots with a win in group play this week against fellow group members, Hong Kong and Nepal. Miclat and the PWNT squad began their qualification Saturday, September 18, with a 3:00 a.m. PST kickoff against Nepal followed by the second group match against Hong Kong on Thursday, September 24, kicking off at 6:00 a.m. PST. All matches for Group F will be played in Uzbekistan.
Miclat is in her second stint with the squad also playing in the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup in Amman, Jordan. Miclat started all four matches as the team finished sixth overall taking on South Korea, China, Thailand, and defeating Jordan. Miclat briefly played earlier this season with Danish club AaB, but recently signed with Aris Limassol in Cyprus for the 2021-22 season.
Current Anteater freshman Laila El Behery will also be joining her national team of Egypt as they look to qualify for the 2022 under-20 Women's World Cup. El Behery recently trained with the senior national team in May, and has played numerous tournament with youth sides prior to joining the Anteaters.
The tournament was scheduled originally for 2021 before it was canceled. Destinee Manzo helped the Mexican side qualify in the 2020 CONCACAF u20 Championships. El Behery and Egypt are among 24 nations vying for two spots out of Africa in the 2022 Tournament. Play for Egypt begins in the second of five rounds playing a two-legged tie against the Republic of Congo to advance to the third round. Camp opens up this week with the first leg kicking off September 25 in Cairo. The second leg will come in Brazzaville of the Congo on October 9 with times still to be determined.
