IRVINE, Calif. - Josh Farmer will represent the UC Irvine men's track & field team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9-12, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Farmer qualified for nationals in the decathlon where he is seeded 12th out of 24. The decathlon gets underway on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the 100m dash. The long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m will also be contested on the first day of the NCAA Championships. The decathletes are right back in action Thursday for the final five events, starting with the 110m hurdles at 9:30 a.m. That will be followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.
"Josh has really put in the work to earn this opportunity to be on the highest stage at the collegiate level," said UCI head coach Jeff Perkins. "I know he is very focused on what he needs to do to find the success he has earned. Josh is representing a program with a storied history of competing well at the NCAA Championships and we couldn't be prouder of his accomplishments. He is an amazing young man with so much room for improved growth, so this is only the beginning. I think Josh being ranked 12th going into the meet is only a small glimpse of what he is capable of as an athlete who has to navigate 10 events over two days. Having trained for this opportunity for three years now, he's as ready as ever to show his potential, and to come out of the meet as an All-American. We are looking forward to it!"
Farmer notched his national qualifying mark at the APU Franson Classic Multis (April 9-10), where he won the decathlon with a personal-record 7,648 points. That performance ranks second in program history, and also puts him at No. 1 in the Big West, No. 8 in the West Region and No. 14 in all of NCAA Division I this season.
The APU Franson Classic was Farmer's first decathlon since 2019, and first as an Anteater. He was consistent across the board, establishing lifetime bests in seven of the 10 events, including a leap of 23-11 in the long jump, which ranks 10th in school history.
Farmer transferred to UCI from Colorado prior to the 2019-20 season. As a freshman with the Buffs, he had a podium finish (3rd) in the decathlon at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships, registering a then lifetime-best 7,089 points. Farmer prepped at Rancho Bernardo High School where he was a two-time California state champion, and set the San Diego Section all-time record with a high school best of 6,963 points.
Farmer has strong track & field roots as his father, Matt, was a three-time Big West champion in the decathlon at UC Irvine, while his mother, Kristin Harkins, was a two-time All-American in the 1500m at Cal Poly Pomona. Kristin was also a star on the Broncos' soccer team, earning all-region and all-conference honors. In addition, Josh's grandfather, Dixon Farmer, was an NCAA champion in the 440 hurdles at Occidental College.
