Villanueva Wins Twice in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team picked up four victories, including three from the throws squad, Thursday at the Fullerton Spring Invitational.
For the second meet in a row, senior Brianna Villanueva was a double champion in the hammer throw and discus. She started the day off with her third individual hammer victory, beating out UC Santa Barbara's Tori Palma by three inches with a Big West-leading toss of 183-01.
A few hours later, Villanueva delivered a convincing win in the discus as she produced a season-best 161-10 to top the field of 16 by over seven feet.
In the shot put, freshman Deandra Tyler was tied with Cal State Fullerton's Sinai Fatafehi at 42-10.75, before unleashing a lifetime-best 43-08.75 on her sixth and final attempt to secure her first collegiate victory. Tyler moved up to No. 6 among UCI's all-time top-10.
Junior Tayla Crenshaw was also fourth in the hammer, sixth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Her mark of 171-11 in the hammer was a personal record and ranks sixth in school history.
On the track, sophomore McKenna Paulson took top honors in the 5000m, crossing the finish line in a lifetime-best 17:43.38. Junior Patricia Sanchez also had a PR 17:51.14 to come in third overall.
Sophomores Cathy Salazar-Gasca (9th, 4:45.37) and Elizabeth Celada Padilla (10th, 4:47.21) both placed among the top-10 in a 1500m field of 28 runners.
Closing out the evening, freshman Alexis Alexander led a quartet of 'Eaters in the 800m with a ninth-place showing (2:21.92).
UC Irvine returns to Titan Track Complex tomorrow to wrap up the Fullerton Spring Invitational with the jumps, sprints, hurdles and relays.
