UCI is set to square off against four other Big West schools, including CSU Bakersfield, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and host Cal State Fullerton. The 'Eaters have 20 student-athletes entered in 11 events, while junior Josh Farmer will also head to Azusa to compete in the decathlon at the Franson Classic Multis, April 9-10.
QUICK HITS
• UCI competed in one meet last season before the rest of the 2020 campaign was canceled due to the pandemic.
• Over a year later, the Anteaters made their return to competition at the Ben Brown Invitational (March 12-13, 2021).
• UC Irvine's roster is comprised of 16 returners and 15 newcomers.
• Three of the returners were All-Big West performers in 2019 - Seth Enochs, Jack Pickard and Kyle Tsu.
• Enochs and Tsu are two of UCI's team captains in 2021.
• The 'Eaters own six marks that rank among the top three in the conference this season.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine combined for six individual victories at the Red & Black Invitational in Northridge last Friday. Kyle Tsu was a double champion in the shot put and discus. He led a quartet of Anteaters in the shot with a season-best 57-09.75, which was a couple inches shy of his personal record that ranks third in program history. Tsu also headlined a 1-2-3 finish for the 'Eaters in the discus with a toss of 169-01. Noah Holm was the runner-up in both events with a season-best 163-06 in the discus. Jack Pickard also had the top mark in the javelin (179-07), while Josh Farmer was first in the high jump (6-03.25).
On the track, Jarel Sayles secured his first collegiate victory, finishing ahead of the pack in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.69. Miles Duncan added an 800m win, crossing the finish line in a season-best 1:54.27.
THROWING IT OUT THERE
Junior Kyle Tsu is currently tops in the Big West in the shot put (57-09.75) and fourth in the discus (174-08). Tsu's mark in the discus, which he notched at the season-opening Ben Brown Invitational, was a lifetime best and put him at No. 8 in school history. He already ranks third among UCI's all-time leaders with a personal-record 57-11.25 in the shot put. Tsu was a 2019 All-Big West performer and NCAA West Preliminary qualifier in the shot put.
LONG JUMP LEADER
Senior Seth Enochs is the top returning long jumper from the 2019 Big West Championships where he was the runner-up with a wind-aided personal-record 25-04. He also came in 15th at the 2019 NCAA West Preliminary Round, and ranks fourth in school history with a wind-legal PR of 25-00.75. In 2021, Enochs owns a season-best 23-11, which ranks second in the conference and 44th in the West Region.
BACK ON TRACK
Prior to the season opener, senior javelin thrower Jack Pickard was last in action at the NCAA West Prelims in May 2019. He advanced to the postseason two years ago with a school-record 221-00. Pickard didn't miss a beat after the long hiatus, opening the 2021 campaign with an individual victory in the javelin at the Ben Brown Invitational. He was the only competitor to surpass 200 feet, winning the event with a season-best 205-05, which is third in the Big West.
MULTI-EVENTS
Junior Josh Farmer is in his second year at UCI after transferring from Colorado. As a true freshman with the Buffaloes, Farmer finished third in the decathlon at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships, compiling a personal-record 7,089 points. So far in 2021, the San Diego native has competed in eight different events, establishing collegiate lifetime bests in the 100m (10.77), 110m hurdles (15.02), pole vault (14-01.25), long jump (23-01.75w) and javelin (164-04).
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Freshman Jarel Sayles has had an impressive start to his collegiate career, placing among the top-two in each of his first three 110m hurdle races. He picked up an individual victory at the Red & Black Invitational, while posting runner-up finishes at the Ben Brown Invite and Jim Bush Legends Invite. At UCLA, Sayles established a season-best 14.49, which was just .02 seconds off his high school PR, and one-tenth of a second shy of cracking UCI's all-time top-10. He enters this week's meet ranked fourth in the Big West.
