IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team is back in action this weekend, making the trip to Malibu for the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Oct. 22-26.
Eight Anteaters are entered in both the singles and doubles draws. Leading the way is second-seeded Emmanuel Coste. Coste, a graduate transfer who was 63rd in the ITA preseason national rankings, opened the 2021 fall season two weeks ago at the ITA All-American Championships. He won his first two matches to advance to the Round of 32 in the qualifying draw before falling to No. 106 Henry Schulenburg of Harvard.
Fellow graduate transfer Riccardo Roberto also competed at the ITA All-American Championships, going 1-1 in the pre-qualifying singles draw. As a pair, Coste and Roberto came in at No. 53 in the preseason doubles rankings.
Four 'Eaters kicked off the 2021-22 campaign at the Hagedorn Hidden Dual in San Diego, Oct. 1-3. Junior Matthew Sah paced the UCI contingent, going 3-0 in singles as he defeated his opponents from Kennesaw State, Denver and the University of San Diego. Junior Ali Amiri added a singles victory against Mattia Ros of Denver.
In doubles, Sah and sophomore Thomas Smart finished with a 2-1 record, while senior Mike Mkrtchian and Amiri went 1-2. Mkrtchian is coming off his best collegiate season after tying for the team lead with nine dual-match singles victories last year. He closed out the regular season on a seven-match win streak, and finished Big West play with a perfect 6-0 record.
True freshmen Rithvik Krishna and Noah Zamora are slated to make their collegiate debuts at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships. Zamora is a blue chip recruit from St. Augustine High School. He was named the 2021 CIF-San Diego Section Player of the Year and was also the recipient of the prestigious USTA Southern California Evelyn Houseman Lifetime Junior Sportsmanship Award.
Krishna, a local product out of Irvine, is a five-star recruit who helped University High School win the 2019 CIF-Southern Section Open Division Championship.
