Anteaters Drop Season Opener at #9 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- UC Irvine women's soccer took a tough loss to open the 2019 season falling 7-0 at No. 9 Virginia in Klockner Stadium Friday night.

First Touches
A number of Anteaters made their collegiate debuts Friday night. UCI was making only its third trip into the to the East Coast and fifth-ever match.

Freshmen Destinee Manzo and Gianna Creighton were in the starting XI in their first career matches. Maddy Chavez and Kyndal McKinney were also making their first career starts. Off the bench, Glo Hinojosa, Julia Gonzalez-Quijano, Emi Smith, Chloe Ragon, and Sarah Ralston all came in for their first minutes of their careers

Cavalier City
The Anteaters (0-1-0) had no answer for ninth-ranked Virginia (1-0-0) after they scored on their second shot of the game in the 12th minute to go up 1-0.

UVA jumped right back in the score column with a goal 95 seconds later, and added to it in the 22nd minute with a header off a cross to lead 3-0 taking that to the half.

The Cavaliers upped the tempo in the second half scoring four more times to finish with the 7-0 final.

Breaking The Streak
Entering the match, UCI had won all four matches against ACC programs before Friday's loss to Virginia. The match was also shown on the ACC Network, a brand new channel that made its debut on Friday.

Virginia had six different scorers with defender Claire Constant as the only player with multiple goals on the match The Anteaters were without a shot in the match or a corner kick. Maddie Newsom picked up four saves in her 59 minutes of play. Hinojosa stepped in for the final 31 minutes stopping two shots and allowing three of the seven goals.

Coming Home
The 'Eaters come back to Southern California for its home opener on Sunday, August 25 taking on Iowa State at 1:00 p.m.
