'Eaters Come Up Short Against Bruins

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 6 UCI women's water polo team dropped an 11-6 decision to No. 3 UCLA on the second day of the Triton Invitational, Sunday afternoon.

UCI moved to 5-2 on the season while the Bruins improve to 13-0 overall.

The Anteaters will play in the third-place game against Michigan today at 4:30 p.m.

INSIDE THE NUMERS
> Tara Prentice led UCI with two goals
> Toni Shackelford, Raegan Castillo, Isabel Rack and Avalon Gook finished with one goal apiece
> Val Ayala had three goals for the Bruins

FIRST QUARTER
> The Bruins scored first, tallying a goal with 3:30 left in the frame
> Rack evened things up after firing in a goal with 2:10 remaining
> UCLA notched two goals in the final minute to take a 3-1 lead

SECOND QUARTER
> The Bruins stretched their lead, 5-1, at 4:18
> Prentice scored to make it 5-2 (1:35) before UCLA added another goal to take a 6-2 lead at the intermission

THIRD QUARTER
> The Bruins went up, 8-2, early in the third frame (6:41)
> Prentice and Shackelford notched back-to-back goals to make it 8-4 with 1:24 to play

FOURTH QUARTER
> The Anteaters suffered another slow start to the frame allowing UCLA to score twice in the first four minutes
> Castillo and Gook each scored to make it 10-6 but it wasn't enough as UCLA sealed the win with a goal scored in the final minute

NOTES
> Prentice leads UCI with 19 goals this season
