'Eaters Dropped in Overtime, 3-2
November 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer saw its Big West Tournament chances come to an end Friday night losing a back-and-forth contest to Cal Poly, 3-2, in overtime at Spanos Stadium.
First Half Frenzy
The Anteaters (4-12-1, 3-3-1) came out firing especially Amber Huff taking the team's first four shots, two on target, and multiple corners testing Cal Poly (5-10-3, 2-3-2) keeper Sophia Brown. The Mustangs responded with a pair of shots on frame, but no goals to speak of.
With six seconds left in the half, UCI had a chance to take hold of the match with a penalty kick, but it was missed wide by Kala McDaniel keeping the match scorerless.
Making Moves
The early parts of the second half saw each side testing the other's keeper, but UCI found the back of the net in the 53rd minute. Huff was back to creating lacing a hard cross into the box that found Piper Wurth who redirected the cross into the goal for the 1-0 Anteater lead.
The first goal opened up the flood gates as the Mustangs got right into things with a goal of their own in the 59th minute. A foul in the box put Jordan Patane on the spot and she would convert to tie it up, 1-1.
Cal Poly made the next move taking the lead in the 72nd minute. CP lifted a ball into the box with Maddie NewsomΒ and Camille Lafaix colliding on the ball as it rolled along to Georgina Stiegeler to nudge it in and make it 2-1, Cal Poly.
The 'Eaters responded immediately on the attack as Erin Covey put up a shot a minute later off the post. Newsom was there to stop a 1v1 chance just 30 seconds later, one of her seven saves on the match, to keep things at 2-1.
It wouldn't stay that way for long as Newsom got into the attack lofting a feed into the box right to Aleah Kelley heading it along to Kala McDaniel who would whirl around with a volley and slide it inside the near post to tie things back up at 2-2 in the 77th minute.
Over and Out
The match needed extra time with the sides knotted with 15 shots apiece. Cal Poly put up an early shot to no avail, but found the winning strike in the 94th minute. Monserrat Hernandez Marquez received a pass and cut back toward goal on the left wing lifting a shot over and in for the finishing shot giving the Mustangs the 3-2 win.
Final Score: Cal Poly 3, UC Irvine 2
The loss coupled with UC Santa Barbara's win against UC Riverside officially eliminated the Anteaters from the Big West Tournament ending a run of three consecutive seasons with the 'Eaters reaching the tournament.
Piper Wurth's goal to start things off was the first in her career in her 15th career match and also on her first career shot. It was delivered by Amber Huff for her first career assist.
Kala McDaniel added her third career goal and now has a goal in two straight matches. Aleah Kelley added an assist, the third of her career, and Maddie Newsom picked up a record-breaking assist giving her four for her career and six points, both surpassing Baylor's Dawn GreathouseΒ who finished with a goal and three assists (five points) over three seasons.
Season Finale
The 'Eaters are 4-12-1 on the season with a 3-3-1 Big West record. One more match remains Sunday, November 3, with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at UC Santa Barbara.
