IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was handed its worst defeat of the season falling 12-0 Tuesday night in Anteater Ballpark to seventh-ranked UCLA.
The Bruins (30-10, 14-4) opened up the scoring early getting their first three runners on base and scoring two of them on a Michael Toglia single and Daniel Amaral sac fly to put UCLA up, 2-0, before the 'Eaters (25-18, 8-7) had even come to bat.
The Bruins added three more in the third inning knocking out Anteater starter
Jake Lachemann with a four-hit inning highlighted by an RBI double from Amaral saddling Lachemann with all five runs through three.
The big blow came in the fourth as
Cole Spear worked through his frame. He didn't get much help with an error to start and the defense failing to turn a double play behind him. After walking the bases loaded and then walking a run in, Jake Pries unloaded with a home run toward the scoreboard in left field for a grand slam busting the game wide open with a 10-0 Bruin lead in the fourth.
The Anteater offense never turned the ignition failing to score with bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings leaving 11 runners in total on the evening suffering the club's second shutout of the season.
Bruins added single runs in the sixth and seventh to complete the 12-0 victory. Pries finished with five RBI, Toglia reached all five times with three hits, two walks, a pair of RBI, and three runs scored, and Amaral drove in three in his two-hit night featuring a double and triple.
Jack Ralston went 4+ shutout innings as the starter for the Bruins. Nick Scheidler earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings and recording all six outs by strikeout.
Lachemann fell to 2-1 on the season striking out three, but giving up five runs on five hits. Spear also allowed five runs, four earned, in 1.2 innings.
The offense mustered nine hits including a four-hit night from
Christian Koss.
Mikey Filia had two hits for the second time in his career out of the nine-hole.
UC Irvine's week against the Pac-12 continues over the weekend with Oregon visiting Cicerone Field. The series gets going Friday night at 6:30 p.m., running through Saturday, and finishing Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. start
