Denholm, Brooks Shine in Series Win, 11-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Anteaters got a big boost Sunday thanks to freshmen Trenton Denholm, with his second stellar start of the week, and Brendan Brooks, driving home four RBIs on the afternoon, to nail down a 11-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara in Anteater Ballpark for the series win.

Denholm got around a pair of early errors to start the game and still retired both runners on the basepaths, and cruised from there retiring the next 11 batters en route to facing the minimum number of UCSB (16-15-1, 3-3) through five innings. The freshman had still yet to allow a hit as he began the seventh inning, but after a hit by pitch, Sam Cohen lifted a liner just over Cole Kreuter and into RF to break the trend. Denholm would finish his inning allowing a run on a wild pitch and collecting a double play to face two over the minimum on the afternoon.

He got a lot of offensive support as the Anteaters struck first for once with a two-out RBI single from Brendan Brooks in the third inning for the 1-0 lead. Brooks wasn't done finishing with four RBIs on the day with RBI singles in the fifth and eighth with a sac fly mixed in in the sixth inning.

The big push for the Anteaters (20-14, 5-4) came in the fifth inning as Parker Coss singled with one out. Matt Reitano swatted a pitch high down the left field line that appeared to hti the left field foul pole. The umpires initially did not rule that way, but after a brief conference, agreed with the junior catcher as he picked up his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 3-0.

The next batter Christian Koss did the same right after Reitano and kept it in the field of play, but left fielder Blake Mann ran into some trouble and dropped the pop fly to really help the flood gates open. Palmer would walk and Brooks singled before Ryan Fitzpatrick hit a towering ball off the LF walk for a two-run triple, and later score on a Nick Anderson sac fly. Konnor Zickefoose also tripled, but was left on base in the six-run Anteater frame to make it 7-0 through five innings.

The 11-1 victory marked the second straight Big West series win for the 'Eaters who are now 6-2 in April and 5-4 in conference play.

Denholm picked up his second win of the week tossing one-hit ball over seven innings. Nick Anderson and Jordan Bocko shored up the final two innings making the seventh game in the last eight in which the pitching staff as allowed two runs or less.

The offense came from everywhere with Brendan Brooks going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, Parker Coss joining with three hits and scoring twice, Chrisitian Koss scored three times and had two hits including a double, and Matt Reitano also scored three times to go with his home run and two RBI.

UC Irvine heads out on the road for the entirety of next week starting Tuesday night at No. 19 UCLA for a 6:00 p.m. start. The weekend that lies ahead lands at CSUN where UC Irvine and the Matadors will play a three-game set starting April 20 at 3:00 p.m.
