Big Innings Key Texas-Sized Win at No. 6 TCU, 15-2

FORT WORTH, Tex. --- UC Irvine earned a Sunday win over No. 6 TCU in big fashion, 15-2, to avoid a sweep over the weekend at Lupton Stadium.

The Anteaters (7-4) took an early lead in the second inning on a grounder, and then got rolling in the fourth inning scoring seven times, six with two outs, to lead 8-0. The big blow in the inning came on a two-out grounder to third baseman Danny Crews off the bat of Brendan Brooks. The 'Eaters had already brought home three runs in the innings, and with the bases loaded, Crews threw low to first base and by the first baseman to allow two more runs to come home. After a pitching change, Ryan Fitzpatrick singled off the first baseman's glove to score to more and complete the inning.

Anteater starter Trenton Denholm motered right along shutting the Horned Frogs (7-3) down through the fourth and fifth before his offense got cooking again.

UCI knocked home another run in the sixth, and Konnor Zickefoose's ground ball to second baseman Tristan Hanoian was booted allowing a second run and keeping the bases loaded for Cole Kreuter. The senior connected to left field up and out for a grand slam to give the Anteaters a sizeable 14-0 lead through six.

Denholm had more than enough, but was not phased as he powered through seven innings of four-hit ball holding the Horned Frogs scoreless. TCU would get a couple home off Anteater reliever Evan McMillin making his debut in the ninth inning, but UCI finished off the victory 15-2 when it was all said and done.

Denholm picked up his first career win staying spotless against No. 6 TCU in seven innings walking just one and allowing four hits while striking out five. TCU starter Russell Smith drew his first career loss allowing four earned runs over 3.2 innings.

The offense had many contributors started off by Cole Kreuter who doubled, homered, drove in four, and scored three times. Fitzpatrick had a pair of hits and RBI. Four Anteaters in all had multi-hit days as UCI needed just 14 hits to score 15 runs, and five Anteaters scored a run.

The win evens the all-time series with TCU at 3-3 as UCI takes down its 48th ranked opponent under head coach Mike Gillespie.

UC Irvine is back on the field next weekend with a trip to Portland for four games starting Friday, Mar. 9 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday and the finale at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
