UCI Unable to Close out Sweep in 8-1 Sunday Loss

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was finally slowed a bit Sunday afternoon in Anteater Ballpark as Nevada swiped an 8-1 win from the 'Eaters to keep UCI from completing the sweep.

After three innings of scoreless baseball, Nevada (1-2) jumped up with three runs in the fourth inning to start a stretch of three straight innings of Wolf Pack offense knocking freshman Trenton Denholm making his collegiate debut out after getting a couple hitters into the fifth inning.

Denhom and five other Anteater pitchers combined on the mound, but couldn't hold back Nevada's bats powered by Mike Echavia's three-hit afternoon. Weston Hatten added a pair of hits and RBI as part of eight Nevada runs on the day.

UCI's offense came in the eighth inning started off by a throwing error on Brendan Brooks' grounder to shortstop. He would eventually come around on a pinch-hit sac fly from Nick Anderson to halt any ideas of a shutout.

Denholm finished with a line of six hits, five earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts over 4+ innings, and was joined by freshmen Brian Marquez, facing one hitter, and Jake Lachemann, 0.2 shutout innings pitched, as 'Eaters to make their debuts on the mound.

Nevada freshman Jake Jackson stole the show with six innings of three-hit ball to score his first win.

The 'Eaters do finish with a series win taking two of three at home to open the season, and will return next weekend for another three-game set in Anteater Ballpark hosting Gonzaga. UCI's next matchup comes Tuesday with a short trip to Loyola Marymount. Starters are yet to be determined for the matchup that starts off at 6:00 p.m.
